Arne Slot provides positive Alexander Isak update ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Galatasaray

It is now three months since Alexander Isak suffered a serious leg break in Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur in December.

The Swedish forward joined the Reds in a record-breaking £125m move from Newcastle United in the summer, but has struggled for form and fitness since his arrival on Merseyside.

The 26-year-old managed three goals and one assist in his 16 appearances for the Reds prior to his major injury.

However, speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League clash with Galatasaray, head coach Arne Slot provided a positive update on the forward’s recovery.

Slot’s Update

Earlier today, Isak was pictured training individually as he continues his recovery.

According to Slot, he is ‘getting closer’ to a return to first-team training.

“Alex isn’t available for tomorrow but the fact that you see him on the pitch tells you that he is getting closer and closer to joining us again,” said Slot.

“As we all know, if you have done four months of individual training, it is quite a step up to play at Premier League or Champions League level.”

Other team news

Arne Slot also confirmed that Joe Gomez is a doubt for Wednesday night. It is believed that the defender had picked up a slight knock in the first-leg defeat to Galatasaray but was forced into playing against Spurs at the weekend.

“Joe wasn’t ready to train today because he had some issues in the last Galatasaray game,” said Slot.

“He wasn’t supposed to play against Spurs, but Ibou [Konate] had some discomfort.”

“Now, he [Gomez] is a doubt for tomorrow,” said Slot.
