Stan Collymore Previews Liverpool’s Clash with PSG

Despite a disastrous season so far, there’s still chance for another historic European night at Anfield. After a 2-0 away defeat in the first leg, Liverpool host Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-final of the Champions League.

A win, as difficult as it would be, would see the Reds face either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich in the final four.

But it is one huge mountain that Liverpool must climb. The reigning champions PSG, knocked out the Reds in a penalty shootout at Anfield last season.

On that occasion, Arne Slot’s side actually took a one goal lead into the return leg on Merseyside. This time, the task is entirely different.

Former Liverpool star Stan Collymore, speaking exclusively to Anfield Index, shared his thoughts on tonight’s massive game…

How can Liverpool beat PSG?

“Liverpool need tempo and aggression to overturn this tie. I played for a Liverpool team
against PSG in the Cup Winners Cup semi-final where we were 3-0 down from the first leg,” said Collymore. “We ended up just going out in the second leg, but we won 2-0 and scored very early. I was
making a nuisance of myself up front, I assisted for Robbie Fowler and we scored within the
first five minutes of the game.”

If Liverpool get a goal in the first 10 minutes at Anfield, anything is possible. PSG will be very
aware of the Anfield mythology and the Barcelona result a few seasons ago – it was an
impossible result but they turned it around,” continued Collymore. “If Liverpool start quickly and are at it from the first whistle, they can get back into the tie.”

“If the game settles down into a classic European second leg, then PSG have the ability and
tools to be able to pick Liverpool off like they did last season. Liverpool can’t allow that and
need to come out of the blocks firing.”

Who could save the day for Liverpool?

As poor as Liverpool have been this season, there’s still plenty of players in the squad capable of producing a moment of magic. In fact, without said moments Arne Slot’s side would be in an untenable position in their campaign.

This season it has often fell to the feet of Dominik Szoboszlai to save the day for the Reds. Whether it be a 30-yard free-kick, or a bullet from the edge of the box – the Hungarian can do it.

Mohamed Salah has enjoyed a stellar relationship with the Champions League during his time at Liverpool and has still managed three goals and two assists in the competition this season.

£100m signing Florian Wirtz has all of the talent to make an impact. Could tonight be the night he really stamps his authority on this new-look Liverpool side?
