The name dominating discussion among Liverpool supporters is Xabi Alonso. The former midfielder remains hugely admired on Merseyside and his managerial reputation continues to grow despite a difficult spell at Real Madrid.

Alonso’s Bundesliga success with Bayer Leverkusen elevated him into Europe’s elite managerial bracket. His connection with Liverpool naturally makes him an attractive option should Fenway Sports Group decide to make a change.

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy believes the pressure on Slot may already be irreversible. Speaking to BBC Sport, Murphy said:

“Slot has won a title, which Brendan didn’t do, so on the surface it would make more sense to stick with him, and I do feel strongly it is unfair to say he only won the title with Klopp’s team. That’s just not right.

“The problem Slot has got, especially at one of the biggest clubs in the world, is that when the fanbase turns, you are really, really struggling to get them back unless you win every game, then not just win, but win in a style Liverpool fans expect and demand.

“This season you have seen Liverpool being dictated to by the way other teams play at Anfield. Fair enough, it’s different away from Anfield, but at home you expect Liverpool to be going after you, not giving you time to breathe. Too often it’s not been like that.”

Murphy’s comments reflect a growing belief that Liverpool’s identity has faded this season. Under Klopp, Anfield was relentless. Opponents suffocated beneath waves of pressure and intensity. Under Slot, Liverpool have often appeared reactive instead of dominant.

That perception matters enormously at a club where style carries almost as much importance as results.

Liverpool Decision Could Shape Next Era

Liverpool’s hierarchy must now decide whether patience is the smarter path or whether decisive action is required before rivals surge ahead.

Murphy believes delaying the inevitable could create even bigger problems. He warned that persisting with Slot carries major risks if results do not improve quickly next season.

“I just don’t see a situation, irrelevant of transfer ins and outs and there are going to be a lot in the summer, where the fans get back to being 100% behind Slot,” Murphy added.

“For that to happen he will have to go on a run like he did in the first season, where he basically won every game. He then has to play in a certain way that Liverpool fans expect.

“I think Slot’s time is probably up. The main reason for saying this is not a dislike of him. I think he’s a good guy and a very bright coach, but the reality is Liverpool’s fanbase is as powerful as any out there.”

Those are strong words from a former player who understands the emotional landscape of Liverpool better than most. The connection between supporters and manager has always been crucial at Anfield. Once fractured, it is notoriously difficult to repair.

Liverpool have also invested heavily in recent transfer windows, meaning expectations have risen sharply. Fans are not prepared to accept decline after tasting success so recently.

Summer Months May Define Future

There is still no indication that Liverpool are preparing to dismiss Slot immediately, but football changes quickly when momentum disappears. Every poor performance adds more pressure. Every flat display increases the volume around Alonso.

For Liverpool supporters, Alonso represents familiarity, ambition and emotional connection. Whether that is enough to convince Fenway Sports Group remains uncertain, but his availability inevitably changes the conversation.

Slot still has time to recover the situation, yet the margin for error is narrowing rapidly. Liverpool are one of football’s most demanding institutions. Winning alone is rarely enough. The manner of victory matters just as much.
