Giorgi Mamardashvili – 6.0
The giant Georgian stopper made a solid early save as the hosts showed a willingness to counter and get shots away. The goal was slightly obscured but could have been better.
After the restart, the Reds’ keeper was unable to stop the second but played well in stopping the riot and the chances that needed his huge frame. The third goal came after multiple brilliant efforts by the backup keeper, as his teammates watched on. The fourth goal was unstoppable.
Ibrahima Konaté – 5.0
The French international was solid enough if a little dragged about. Some good moments on the ball driving to push through.
When the match resumed, the former Bundesliga star was too emotional as the game started to slide away from the visitors.
Milos Kerkez – 5.0
The Hungarian international was limited on the ball and showed little connection with his winger.
After the break, the exciting full-back was anonymous for large periods as the game swept past the inexperienced left back. A fine block to stop the third goal was critical within a melee of defensive craziness.
Joe Gomez – 5.0
The England international was diligently aware of his defensive duties but offered little on the ball.
In the second half, the former academy graduate was unable to match the speed and desire of the hosts as they started to ramp up the pressure.
Subbed – 66 mins
Virgil van Dijk – 7.0
The captain and leader of this team was at times flat-footed and showed his best ability in nearly creating a goal with a dangerous header in the opposing area.
After the intermission, the former Celtic giant was able to equalise with a solid header across the keeper and into the net. Another headed goal failed to bring any positive momentum.
Ryan Gravenberch – 4.0
The Dutch international was unable to control or offer good options in progressing the ball.
After the intermission, the midfield man was a little more assertive on the ball as the Reds sought to fight back, however, when Villa picked up he was vacant in midfield.
Subbed – 66 mins
Dominik Szoboszlai – 6.0
The Hungarian international was able to test from distance and put some decent deliveries into the box.
When the match resumed, the former Bundesliga star was able to continue with his good delivery as he assisted the equaliser with a pinpoint set piece. So unlucky with the slip which led to the Villans second goal. Another fine delivery for the second Liverpool goal.
Alexis Mac Allister – 4.0
The Argentina World Cup winner was keen to press and tried to bring some thrust into the central areas.
After the restart, the former Brighton midfielder was unable to match the tenacity of the opposition team as the play drifted from end to end. Looked weak and too slow.
Curtis Jones – 5.0
The England international was positionless at times and failed to dictate or control key areas.
In the second half, the former academy graduate was always willing to run and offered better on-ball assertiveness in carrying the ball through the lines.
Rio Ngumoha – 7.0
The teenage prodigy was the bright spark going forward and tried to test his marker and saw a well-struck shot fly over the bar.
After the break, the former Chelsea academy graduate was able to again offer the best way forward with a surging run on the outside and chance creation. A brilliant effort from distance was halted only by the foot of the far post.
Man of the match
Cody Gakpo – 4.0
The Dutch player was a relative ghost who showed a lack of incision and speed.
After the restart, the inconsistent attacker was unlucky with a close-range effort off a rebound.
Subbed – 74 mins
Substitutions;
Federico Chiesa – 5.0 (on 66)
Came on to add a little more urgency.
Florian Wirtz – 5.0 (on 66)
Came on but could offer very little.
Mohamed Salah – 6.0 (on 74
Came on to add desire.
The Manager;
Arne Slot – 1.0
The starting lineup was cautious and built to contain and control.
The second-half substitutes were reactionary as no game plan was shown.
Steven Smith’s Pre-match Prediction;
Aston Villa 3 – 1 Liverpool
