Liverpool Face Ibrahima Konate Contract Blow as Summer Plans Grows More Complex

On Anfield Index’s Media Matters podcast, Dave Davis and Lewis Steele discussed a major Liverpool development, Ibrahima Konate is “pretty much set to leave Liverpool”, with Davis framing the mood around a player now expected to depart when his contract expires next month.

Steele said the news had landed unexpectedly. “We were expecting something to happen on Konate,” he told Davis, adding, “I was expecting it to be the opposite of this news. I was expecting him to renew.” He said “quite a lot of people were maybe even people inside the club” thought the same.

For Liverpool, the issue was clear. Steele said “losing a player of that stature for nothing is a huge dent to Liverpool”, especially in a summer where the club “already got to spend an awful lot of money to replace Salah and maybe a midfielder as well.”

Financial package appears central

Davis asked whether the breakdown was “just wages specifically or anything else”. Steele replied, “It must be related to the wages”, while stressing that he did not know “the numbers that were on the table.”

He added that Liverpool “were prepared to reward him well for the role that he’s played in the title win last season” and because he had “played nearly every game this season.” Steele said Konate had “played 51 games this season” out of “a possible 57.”

His conclusion was direct. “The only conclusion I can draw from that is that Konate’s expectations were just a bit pie in the sky.” Steele also said, “I can’t really understand any of the situation and it doesn’t really reflect well on anyone.”

Arne Slot faces defensive pressure

Davis said the situation had moved from Konate saying things were “close” after Everton to this latest position, calling it “all a bit crazy.” Steele described the matter as “bizarre” and said it was “crazy” Liverpool had reached this point after other major contract exits.

He said Konate “has played nearly every game of the last two seasons” and was “clearly important to the team and to the club.” The impact on Liverpool’s manager was put plainly. Steele called it “a massive smack in the face for Arie Slot, Richard Hughes and people like that.”

The depth concern is immediate. Steele said Liverpool had “asked about central defenders”, although “whether that means they’ll sign one is a completely different thing.” He added, “I always thought that Jacquet and Leoni were the Van Dijk replacements, not the Konate replacements.”

Transfer market senses opportunity

Davis referenced Steele’s phrase, “transfer market one, Liverpool zero”, and Steele explained why the summer now looks harder. “It was a big test this summer already and now this just sort of puts them on an uphill struggle,” he said.

On Konate’s appeal elsewhere, Steele said, “He’s obviously not the best defender in the world and he does have a mistake in him, but he is all right and when he’s playing well, he’s very good.” He added that a club could now get “a player who’s won a Premier League who’s played 200 games for Liverpool nearly who’s available for nothing.”

For Bayern, Real Madrid, PSG or others, Steele said the reaction could be, “Thank you very much. We’ll have a bit of that.” His verdict was simple, “He’s going to be a good pickup for someone for sure.”

Liverpool are left with uncertainty. Davis said there are “a lot of players leaving” and “a lot of uncertainty.” Steele warned that “there’s an awful lot of problems” for Richard Hughes to solve. He also said, “There is a real void in that leadership, you know, the dressing room and standard setting.”
