Van Hecke Transfer Clarity Raises Liverpool Question
World Cup Focus Comes First
Jan Paul van Hecke has offered a carefully measured update on his future, with Liverpool and Tottenham both linked to the Brighton defender.
The Dutch centre back, now preparing for the Netherlands’ World Cup opener against Japan in Dallas, made it clear that club matters can wait.
“First of all, I just want to focus on the Dutch national team on Sunday.
“That is a very important match for us, for me. So that’s my focus until now. Of course, things are also playing, and I know that myself too. But that’s not for now, that’s more after the World Cup. I will then see where I play.
Liverpool Interest Adds Intrigue
Liverpool are believed to have checked on Van Hecke before Arne Slot’s departure, while Tottenham have reportedly seen two bids rejected by Brighton. That tells its own story. This is not merely agent noise or tournament window speculation. There is market interest, and Brighton know how to price defensive talent.

For Liverpool, Van Hecke fits an obvious profile. Premier League experience, age on his side, comfort in possession and international pedigree. Playing alongside Virgil van Dijk for the Netherlands will only sharpen focus on whether he could one day become part of Liverpool’s defensive succession plan.
Clarity Before Club Decision
Van Hecke’s comments suggest his next step may already be mapped out privately.
“I have also said very clearly that I would like to have clarity for myself before the World Cup. And I have that too. But then for now for myself it’s just clear. I just want to play the World Cup as well as possible.
“That clarity will probably come after the World Cup when when I make that step, then it’s clear to everyone.”
That final line is the most revealing. “When I make that step” sounds less like uncertainty and more like timing. Brighton may already be preparing for that possibility, with reports suggesting interest in Croatian defender Luka Vuskovic as a replacement.
Brighton Path Still Matters
Van Hecke’s journey gives this story more weight. He has not taken the smooth academy-to-elite-club route. He spoke warmly about his rise and the impact any transfer could have on former club NAC Breda, who hold a 7.5 per cent sell-on clause.
“My story is special anyway, because I was still playing as a main class amateur at 17.
“We were promoted then and that is of course special now that you take such a step and very nice amounts will eventually go back to where you started. Of course those people are watching and thinking about that amount!”.
For Liverpool, the Van Hecke question may depend on timing, price and structure. For the player, the immediate task is simpler, deliver for Holland, then let the market speak.
