The Truth Behind Liverpool’s Move to Sign Victor Munoz

Liverpool may have already put themselves a strong contender for transfer twist of the summer.

At this time yesterday, everything was pointing towards Victor Munoz joining Newcastle United from Osasuna. The Magpies had been working on the deal for weeks, negotiating a deal worth £29m for the 22-year-old forward.

However, in the past 24 hours something changed. Liverpool swooped in and wrapped up the deal. Munoz has completed his medical and will make the switch to Anfield for £34.5m.

Sky Sports’ Keith Downie has lifted the lid on how the Reds managed to pull off the deal, leaving Newcastle United stunned once again.

How did Liverpool Sign Munoz?

Speaking on X, the reliable reporter revealed the details of the transfer twist, saying: “Newcastle thought they had a deal in place to sign Victor Munoz – before a late Liverpool hijack.”

“Newcastle had a fee of £29m (+4.3m) accepted by Osasuna and the player had agreed personal terms and told #NUFC he wanted to sign. Agent fees were also agreed.”

“Newcastle had the wheels in motion for a medical over in the US and were on the verge of completing a deal.”

“But they were instructed to wait over the last 24 hours by the player’s representatives, and #LFC swooped.”

“Liverpool had always been at the table for Munoz so they didn’t come in at the last minute, but agreed £34.5m release clause (two installments) and Munoz chose Anfield.”

Where Did Liverpool’s Interest Come From?

There wasn’t a single murmour about Liverpool’s interest in Munoz. All of Liverpool’s attention was reportedly on pushing for a deal to sign RB Leipzig forward Yan Diomande.

But according to Paul Joyce of The Times, it was in fact new head coach Andoni Iraola who pushed Liverpool into action.

Joyce said: “Andoni Iraola pushed for Liverpool to make Spain winger Victor Munoz his first signing.”

“Iraola’s extensive knowledge of the Osasuna player led him to ask the Anfield club to accelerate their interest in the 22-year-old during discussions between the new head coach and sporting director Richard Hughes on reshaping the first-team squad.”

Munoz arrives a young, energetic and direct forward. But his key attribute might be his versatility. Whilst mostly deployed on the left-wing, he is also capable of featuring as a central forward and on the opposite flank.

This is crucial. Especially with Hugo Ekitike sidelined until late 2026 at least with a ruptured achilles.

However, Joyce stresses to point out that Liverpool still want to sign Yan Diomande too.
