Liverpool Face Rio Ngumoha Question as RB Leipzig Talks Continue

Liverpool’s negotiations with RB Leipzig over Yan Diomande have taken on another layer after the Bundesliga club reportedly expressed interest in Rio Ngumoha.

The 17-year-old is regarded internally and externally as one of the most exciting young talents in the game, and Liverpool’s stance appears firm. While discussions over Diomande continue, there is no indication that Ngumoha is being made available as part of any wider transfer conversation.

That matters. Liverpool are attempting to strengthen Andoni Iraola’s squad with elite young talent, not trade away one of their own most valuable prospects before he has had the opportunity to develop properly at Anfield.

RB Leipzig request quickly dismissed

According to Sky Germany reporter Philipp Hinze, RB Leipzig asked about Ngumoha several weeks ago, following similar interest from Bayern Munich.

“In addition to FC Bayern, RB Leipzig also expressed interest in Liverpool’s Rio Ngumoha weeks ago,” he said.

“It quickly became clear that the 17-year-old is not feasible for Leipzig. Package, ambitions, competition…

“Exciting profile for RB, but currently not doable, unless a completely unforeseen door opens during the transfer period. Player currently (far) out of Leipzig’s reach.”

Those comments point towards a clear conclusion. Liverpool have little appetite to open the door, while Leipzig appear to recognise the scale of the financial and sporting package required to even begin a serious discussion.

Diomande talks remain central

Liverpool’s pursuit of Yan Diomande remains the main story. The Reds are understood to be optimistic about securing the player, although reaching an agreement with RB Leipzig is expected to require a significant fee.

There have also been suggestions that Harvey Elliott could be offered as part of an attempt to reduce the cost. However, Leipzig’s interest in Ngumoha suggests they have also looked at alternative ways to extract value from the talks.

From Liverpool’s perspective, the calculation is relatively straightforward. Diomande is seen as a major target for the new era under Iraola, but Ngumoha is also viewed as a player with rare upside. Allowing one elite teenager to leave in order to sign another would weaken the broader logic of the rebuild.

Liverpool must protect elite potential

Ngumoha’s situation will be watched closely across Europe. Bayern Munich’s interest already showed that Liverpool are not alone in recognising his ceiling. RB Leipzig’s enquiry only reinforces that point.

For Liverpool, this should be treated as a compliment, not a problem. Clubs with strong talent identification departments are circling because Ngumoha looks like a player with genuine top-level potential.

The message from Anfield appears firm. Rio Ngumoha is not part of the Diomande equation. Liverpool want to build a younger, faster, more dynamic squad, and keeping their best emerging talent must be central to that plan.

If Diomande arrives from RB Leipzig, the ambition should be clear. Liverpool want these players together, not one exchanged for the other.
