Andoni Iraola Pre-Season Begins as Liverpool Players Face New Demands

Andoni Iraola’s Liverpool reign is moving towards its first major test, and pre-season already feels more important than usual.

Speaking to Trev Downey on Anfield Index, Lewis Steele explained why early preparation could matter hugely for Liverpool, especially after several players exited the World Cup earlier than expected.

Pre-Season Timing Could Help Liverpool

Steele believes Liverpool should benefit from having key players back sooner.

“They’re going to all have a chance to impress the new boss.”

That point matters. Iraola is arriving with different ideas, different demands and a style that may take time to absorb.

Steele added:

“He’ll get a chance to get his methods across.”

For Liverpool, that could be crucial. The squad are due to head to Nashville, and this tour now becomes a working camp rather than a commercial exercise.

Iraola’s Methods May Take Time

Steele warned that Iraola’s approach may not click immediately.

“His ideas look quite complex.”

He also described them as: “Quite reliant on physicality.”

That should shape expectations. Liverpool supporters may want an instant lift, but Steele suggested there could be an adaptation period.

“It might take a while.”

He also referenced Iraola’s early spell at Bournemouth, where results took time to come before the wider project improved.

Physical Demands Could Be Clear Early

Downey raised the intensity of Iraola’s training methods, and Steele agreed Liverpool may need to adjust quickly.

He said:

“Liverpool looked quite unfit quite a lot of the season last year.”

That is a blunt assessment, and it explains why pre-season could be so revealing. If Iraola wants Liverpool to press, run and compete with renewed aggression, the physical reset starts now.

Steele also made the point that Iraola will not have the same patience at Liverpool as he did at Bournemouth.

“Things he could get away with at Bournemouth, such as big losing streaks, big winless streaks, you can’t get away with them at a club the size of Liverpool.”

Fast Start Still Needed

Despite expecting an adjustment period, Steele remains positive about the appointment.

“Of all the managers that were on the market, I do think that he was the best man for the job.”

He praised Iraola’s work at Bournemouth, especially given the resources available to him.

“They’ve got one of the lowest budgets in the Premier League.”

Steele’s wider point was clear. Iraola improved players, built a modern style and pushed Bournemouth forward. Liverpool now need that same coaching impact, only at a club where pressure arrives much faster.

Pre-season, then, becomes the first serious indicator. It will show which players respond, which players struggle, and how quickly Iraola can imprint his football on a squad that badly needs direction.

As Steele put it, Liverpool’s returning players now have “a chance to impress the new boss.” For Iraola, the work starts immediately.
