Liverpool 4-2 Sunderland: Joe Gomez Injury Concern Raises Early Defensive Questions
Liverpool opened the Andoni Iraola era with a lively 4-2 win over Sunderland, but the biggest talking point from Nashville quickly became Joe Gomez and a fresh injury concern that could stretch the squad’s centre-back resources before the new campaign properly gathers pace.
Gomez, still Liverpool’s longest-serving player, lasted only seven minutes before going down and requiring treatment. After being attended to by club doctor Jonathan Power and head of physiotherapy Chris Morgan, he was substituted immediately. Although the defender managed to walk off slowly, the sight of him leaving so early will have left plenty of concern around Liverpool’s back line.
Joe Gomez injury leaves Liverpool short at centre-back
For Iraola, this was an encouraging first result as Liverpool head coach, but it also underlined a clear issue. The defensive unit already looks light, and Gomez’s setback threatens to increase that pressure in the short term. There was understandable concern from the new manager after the final whistle, especially given the current state of his central defensive options.
Jérémy Jacquet, Liverpool’s £60m signing from Rennes, was unavailable and could not make his debut in the United States. The French defender is still building fitness and needs more training time, although there is hope he could feature against Leeds in Chicago next week.
Andoni Iraola faces early selection challenge
Another factor is the situation surrounding Giovanni Leoni. The 19-year-old Italian has yet to rejoin first-team training and has only recently resumed running on grass after suffering a significant knee injury last September. Iraola is clearly taking a cautious approach and is not putting any timeframe on the young centre-back’s return.
That means Liverpool could head into the next stage of pre-season with limited senior cover in a key area. A 4-2 victory over Sunderland offered promising attacking signs and a positive start for Iraola, but the Joe Gomez injury may prove the more important development if Liverpool are forced to juggle their centre-back plans in the coming days.
