Liverpool Transfer Target Yankuba Minteh Facing Months Out With Injury
Liverpool’s search for attacking reinforcements has encountered another complication, with reported target Yankuba Minteh expected to miss between two and three months because of a right leg injury.
According to The Athletic, Brighton & Hove Albion are preparing to be without the 22 year old until the autumn after he suffered the problem during their 3-0 pre season victory over Roma.
For Liverpool, the development removes some immediate flexibility from a transfer market that has already required plenty of patience.
Andoni Iraola has welcomed Jeremy Jacquet, Victor Munoz and Ronald Araujo into his squad this summer, although strengthening the wide areas remains firmly on the agenda.
Minteh Injury Complicates Liverpool Interest
Minteh has been mentioned among Liverpool’s alternatives as the club continues its pursuit of Paris Saint Germain winger Bradley Barcola.
Ibrahim Mbaye has also been considered, although Barcola appears to remain the standout target as Liverpool attempt to reshape their attack before the transfer window closes on September 1.
Any potential move for Minteh now becomes considerably more difficult.
The Gambia international suffered the injury following a challenge involving Roma captain Bryan Cristante early in the second half. Minteh initially attempted to continue after receiving treatment, before quickly realising his afternoon was over.
The Athletic reports it remains uncertain whether surgery will be required.
That uncertainty matters. Clubs rarely spend significant money on players carrying injuries when the recovery timetable remains unclear, particularly when the problem could keep the player unavailable for the opening months of a new season.
Brighton Face Difficult Opening Period
Minteh’s absence also creates an immediate problem for Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler.
Kaoru Mitoma remains sidelined following hamstring surgery and has yet to feature during pre season. That means Brighton could begin competitive action without the two wide players who have formed Hurzeler’s preferred partnership.
Minteh and Mitoma have started together in 45 Premier League matches during the previous two campaigns.
Minteh has produced nine goals and eight assists from 66 league appearances across that period, while Mitoma has registered 13 goals and five assists in 61 games.
Those numbers underline why Brighton have placed considerable faith in the pair.
There are younger options available. Zadok Johanna has arrived this summer, while Ibrahim Osman, Amario Cozier Duberry and Nehemiah Oriola remain part of the wider picture. None carries the Premier League experience offered by Minteh and Mitoma.
Transfer Market Pressure Builds
Brighton currently have no plans to recruit a replacement for Minteh, according to The Athletic, with the club expecting him to return during the autumn.
That confidence will be tested immediately.
Brighton travel to Norway to face Tromso in the first leg of their Europa Conference League play off before beginning their Premier League campaign against Aston Villa three days later. The European return fixture follows on August 27.
For Liverpool, the consequences are different.
Minteh appeared to offer an intriguing Premier League proven option should negotiations elsewhere fail. His pace, direct running and willingness to attack defenders would provide qualities Iraola could utilise immediately.
An injury lasting potentially three months changes that calculation completely.
Liverpool have little reason to take unnecessary risks at this point. Their focus can remain on Barcola and other alternatives capable of contributing from the beginning of the campaign.
With Newcastle United awaiting at St James’ Park and the competitive season approaching rapidly, Liverpool need players who can influence matches now.
Minteh’s talent remains obvious. His availability, unfortunately, has become the bigger issue.

This is one of those transfer updates that should make Liverpool supporters rather curious about what happens next.
Minteh has always felt like an interesting alternative rather than the player Liverpool desperately needed to build their summer around. He has Premier League experience, serious pace and enough unpredictability to cause defenders problems, so you can understand why his name has featured in discussions.
A two to three month injury surely changes everything.
Liverpool have spent much of this summer trying to reshape Iraola’s squad and there is little sense in committing major money to a winger who could miss a significant section of the opening months.
The more intriguing question surrounds Bradley Barcola.
If Minteh was genuinely positioned somewhere on Liverpool’s list of alternatives, one option has suddenly become considerably less attractive. That could strengthen the determination to find an agreement with PSG, assuming Barcola remains the preferred choice.
Liverpool supporters will also watch Ibrahim Mbaye’s situation carefully, although the feeling remains that the club should pursue the winger Iraola truly wants rather than reaching September and settling for whoever happens to remain available.
Minteh remains a player worth monitoring once he recovers. For this particular transfer window, however, Liverpool’s attention should probably be elsewhere.
