Stephen Warnock Reacts to Liverpool’s ‘Really Poor’ Summer Transfer Window

Despite weeks of speculation, Liverpool had a fairly quiet end to the summer transfer window.

The Reds managed to wrap up five arrivals with Lucca Brughmans, Jeremy Jacquet, Ronald Araujo, Victor Munoz and Bradley Barcola making the move to Merseyside.

Interestingly, Liverpool somehow ended the transfer window with the largest net spend after massive struggles to sell players.

Ibrahima Konate, Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah all left for free, whilst Curtis Jones joined Inter Milan for around £30m.

Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock spoke to Anfield Index and shares his thoughts on their transfer window…

Warnock Rates Liverpool’s Business

When asked how he would rate Liverpool’s transfer business, Warnock was fairly damning with his verdict.

“So, they’ve got that goalkeeper joining next summer, Jacquet who I’m not classing as a summer signing, Araujo on loan, Barcola and Munoz,” said Warnock, “Then among that you lose Curtis Jones, Ibrahima Konate, Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah.”

“I’d honestly say it’s a 5/10 transfer window… if that. It was really poor from Liverpool’s point of view.”

“I loved it when Liverpool were buying un-earthed gems who no one knew about for £40-50 million, and now it seems like our model has completely changed, and it’s know what you expect from a club like Liverpool.”

Liverpool’s Expensive Signings

Warnock’s observation is more than fair. Virgil van Dijk’s £75m move from Southampton in 2018 sat as the record for years.

However, in the past year alone, Liverpool have signed three players for more than £100m. Firstly, Florian Wirtz arrived from Bayer Leverkusen in a £116m deal, then Alexander Isak followed him through the door at Anfield for £125m.

Then this summer, Bradley Barcola has arrived from Paris Saint-Germain for £123m. That’s £364m on three players, which is absolutely bonkers. All whilst letting most of their players walk out of the door for nothing!

The Reds have spent around £657m on transfers in the last three transfer windows. And when you look at the shape of Andoni Iraola’s squad, it is absolutely mind-boggling.
