Virgil van Dijk contract situation discussed as Liverpool decision looms

Virgil van Dijk’s Liverpool contract situation was one of the key issues discussed by Dave Davis and Lewis Steele on the latest episode of Anfield Index’s Media Matters.

Steele agreed that the situation deserves attention, particularly given how little Van Dijk’s level has changed over the past couple of seasons.

Steele acknowledged that Van Dijk may have lost some pace, but did not see a major decline in his performances.

“His level has stayed pretty consistent,” Steele said during the discussion. He added that Van Dijk remains among the leading centre-backs in the Premier League and pointed to his status as Liverpool captain.

Steele then raised the possibility of another season at Anfield, asking: “And I think, you know, if he could do an extra year, then what why why not?”

That comment reflected the central question around the contract. Liverpool have policies concerning extensions for older players, but Steele noted that Van Dijk had already represented an exception when the club renewed his terms previously.

Liverpool captain has kept future quiet

Van Dijk has already been asked about his contract situation, according to Steele, but the defender has not given much away.

Steele said Van Dijk had been asked about the situation in mixed zones and that “he’s not really said much”.

He suggested the situation could develop depending on where things stand in six months, while also making clear that he currently struggles to envisage Van Dijk playing elsewhere.

“right now he’s still playing every week and looks as fit fit as ever,” Steele said.

That remains consistent with Van Dijk’s latest public comments. After Liverpool’s win over Bournemouth in September, he was asked about a possible extension and replied that there was “nothing to report”, saying he was focusing on the present.
