Joe Gomez Future Unclear as Aston Villa Monitor Liverpool Defender
Aston Villa are among the clubs showing interest in Liverpool defender Joe Gomez, with the England international’s future at Anfield unresolved as he enters the final year of his contract.
The 29 year old has not been the subject of an official approach from Villa at this stage, but Daily Mail Sport reports that he has emerged as a potential target. His versatility is understood to be central to the attraction, with Gomez capable of operating at centre back, right back and, when required, on the left side of defence.
Besiktas and AC Milan have also monitored the situation in recent months. Milan, however, are undergoing changes across their senior management and technical structure, which may affect the timing or direction of any potential pursuit.
Aston Villa Assess Defensive Options
Villa are expected to strengthen their squad ahead of a demanding Champions League campaign, with Unai Emery keen to add depth and experience across key areas.
Gomez is viewed as a player who could help cover several defensive roles, particularly in a season where Villa will need to balance domestic commitments with European football. Any move would depend on Liverpool’s valuation and whether Villa decide to formalise their interest.
Liverpool Face Contract Decision
Liverpool’s position is complicated by Gomez’s contract status. With only 12 months remaining on his deal, this summer may represent the club’s best chance to command a fee if no extension is agreed.
However, Liverpool are not in a position where defensive departures would be straightforward. Conor Bradley is facing a lengthy layoff with a knee injury, while Jeremie Frimpong is regarded as more naturally suited to playing as a winger or attacking wing back.

That increases Gomez’s importance, even if he is not guaranteed to be a regular starter. His ability to cover multiple positions has made him a valuable squad option over several seasons.
Previous Transfer Talks Provide Context
Gomez has been discussed in previous transfer scenarios. He came close to leaving for Crystal Palace last summer during negotiations involving Marc Guehi, while Newcastle also considered him in conversations connected to Anthony Gordon.
That history underlines the fact that Gomez continues to carry appeal in the market. Clubs value his experience, Premier League background and defensive adaptability.
For Liverpool, the decision will come down to planning. If Gomez stays, the club retain a proven and flexible defender. If he leaves, they will almost certainly need to replace his versatility, particularly with existing concerns over defensive depth.
At present, Villa’s interest has not advanced to a formal bid, but the situation is one to monitor as the summer window develops.
