Some performances demand a Man of the Match award because a player dominates an entire game.

Then some performances stand out because a player provides something that everyone else on the pitch appears to lack. Against Nottingham Forest, Víctor Muñoz provided exactly that, which was the endeavour he showed when entering the field last weekend against Newcastle.

The young Spaniard was Liverpool’s most direct and explosive attacking presence at Anfield, repeatedly attempting to move the ball forward rather than allowing possession to become slow and predictable. His willingness to receive the ball, turn towards his opponent and attack space immediately gave Nottingham Forest something different to think about.

That directness was essential and aligns with the new manager’s demands.

Liverpool have spent too much of the past season playing football that became predictable once opponents established their defensive shape. Muñoz offers a completely different proposition. He wants to run beyond defenders, he possesses genuine pace and he has the determination to keep attacking even when the first attempt does not work.

That mentality stood out. His versatility also makes him particularly intriguing, even with the impending arrival of Bradley Barcola.

Muñoz can operate from either flank, meaning Andoni Iraola has another option when attempting to manipulate the opposition’s defensive structure. With Liverpool still attempting to reshape their forward line following Mohamed Salah’s departure, having a young player capable of providing genuine competition across both wings could prove invaluable.

But it was his equaliser that ultimately defined the afternoon.

Muñoz produced a brilliant finish, rifling the ball into the roof of the net with the conviction of a player who belongs at this level. It was not a fortunate finish or a scrappy goal created through chaos.

It was a statement. A player receiving the ball and possessing the confidence to attack the opportunity with absolute conviction.

The Spark Liverpool Have Been Waiting For

The rest of Liverpool’s performance was considerably more mixed.

Alisson Becker was very good once again, producing important saves when his defence failed to provide sufficient protection.

The full-backs were less convincing.

Milos Kerkez remained limited in his overall influence, while Jeremie Frimpong struggled particularly when Liverpool were forced to defend. His pace remains a tremendous asset, but his positioning and physical limitations continue to create questions that Iraola must eventually address.

The attack, however, looked closer to clicking.

Alexander Isak eventually found the net, Florian Wirtz showed glimpses of the creativity that made him such a significant signing and Cody Gakpo provided the delivery that created the second equaliser.

Yet Muñoz was the player who gave the attack its edge. His movement created uncertainty. His pace stretched Forest. His determination changed the tempo. That is precisely what Liverpool need from their wide players.

There is still an enormous amount of work ahead for Iraola. Liverpool require greater midfield protection, improved defensive balance and further attacking additions if they are going to compete at the highest level again.

But sometimes a new era begins with a single player providing a glimpse of what could be possible.
