Bradley Barcola to Liverpool: Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher Excited by £123m Signing

Liverpool’s move for Bradley Barcola has added another extraordinary piece to a squad already containing some of the Premier League’s most expensive attacking talent.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher assessed what Barcola could bring to Liverpool, where he might fit and why the French winger has the qualities to excite supporters.

The fee discussed on the programme was £106 million, potentially rising to £123 million, while Cody Gakpo is expected to stay. Liverpool also have Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz among their attacking options.

For Henry, there was little hesitation when he was asked whether Liverpool supporters should be excited about Bradley Barcola.

“Very excited. Very excited,” Henry said.

Henry Highlights Barcola’s One v One Threat

Henry’s analysis centred on how Liverpool use Barcola and, specifically, whether they can consistently create the situations in which he has been so dangerous.

“There is something, a big thing about Barcola, it depends how you’re going to play,” Henry explained. “Are you going to be able to put him in one v one situations? Obviously, he’s going to work for you.”

Henry also highlighted Barcola’s willingness to contribute without the ball.

“He’s not shy of putting pressure, going up and down. He’s not a cheat. He will do that for you.”

That work rate could prove important for Andoni Iraola, although Henry believes Barcola’s greatest qualities emerge when he receives possession with space to attack defenders.

Discussing his time in Paris, Henry said Barcola was regularly able to collect the ball out wide and attack “a one v one, a one v two, sometimes a one v three.”

His speed provides another route.

“What you have also, if you want to play on the counter, he’s fast as hell,” Henry said.

There was, though, one area Henry believes requires improvement.

“He needs to finish a tiny bit better. And if he does that, a lot of teams will be in trouble with him.”

Carragher Sees Immediate Liverpool Role

Carragher was equally clear about where Bradley Barcola fits at Liverpool.

“He’s going to go straight in onto this left wing position,” Carragher said.

The former Liverpool defender described Barcola as “a huge upgrade” on Liverpool’s existing options on that side.

“There’s no doubt he’s a huge upgrade on what they’ve got in terms of left wing positions. No doubt.”

Liverpool’s right side, however, remains less straightforward in Carragher’s view. Gakpo is staying, according to the discussion, but Carragher does not regard him as a natural option there.

“I think they’ll almost have to fudge the right side a little bit with Muñoz, Gakpo, Rio Ngumoha as well. They’re not natural players for that side.”

Barcola Joins Liverpool’s Expensive Attack

The scale of Liverpool’s attacking investment was another striking feature of Carragher’s assessment.

“When you actually look at it now and you look at sort of Barcola, Wirtz and Isak as a three, really three players over £100 million,” he said.

Yet Carragher stopped short of declaring Liverpool obvious Premier League favourites despite that investment.

“We’re still probably not talking about this Liverpool team as being a team who we think can win the league. It’s amazing. It’s fascinating, isn’t it, really, when you think about that?”

His conclusion was that Liverpool’s squad construction remains unfinished.

“There’s still more work to do really.”

Premier League Gains Another Star

Barcola’s arrival nevertheless provides Liverpool with a player Carragher believes can bring some much needed excitement to English football.

“It feels like there’s probably the Premier League lacking a little bit of stardust with certain players,” Carragher said. “He should provide that, not just for Liverpool but the Premier League as well.”

Henry’s assessment provides the clearest indication of what Liverpool have bought. Barcola offers speed, defensive work, one v one ability and the capacity to attack multiple defenders. Finishing remains an area where Henry believes further progress can be made.

Carragher, meanwhile, sees no ambiguity about Barcola’s place in Iraola’s team. For him, the Frenchman goes directly onto Liverpool’s left wing.

At a potential £123 million, expectations will inevitably be substantial. Judging by the assessments offered on Sky Sports, Henry and Carragher believe Liverpool have acquired a winger capable of meeting them.
