Scouser Tommies: ONE HUGE WEEKEND

Scouser Tommies: ONE HUGE WEEKEND

Join Jim Boardman and Jay Reid as they soak in the incredible atmosphere enveloping the city of Liverpool ahead of a monumental Bank Holiday weekend. The city is buzzing with events, from Radio One's Big Weekend to cruise liners docking, but most important of all it’s the final game of the season - a formality to go through before that long-awaited trophy lift, ahead of the victory parade through the city’s streets on Monday. For Jay, that trophy lift is an especially poignant moment; it’s the first time in his lifetime he'll witness Liverpool lift the league trophy at Anfield – a ticket he wouldn't sell for any price. It’s the first time the Reds have lifted the league trophy in front of fans at Anfield for 35 years, so a large chunk of the Liverpool support are in the same boat. Two of the greatest centre-backs in football history will be on the pitch as the trophy gets lifted, with true club legend Alan Hansen set to present the trophy to future club legend Virgil Van Dijk, adding to the symbolism of the occasion. Jurgen Klopp will be there too, keeping to his promise of coming back but not in a way that would interfere with the work of Arne Slot. No surprise he’s there; he’s as big a fan as any of us, and every fan wants to be there. If only - but Anfield, as big as it now is, can’t possibly contain every Red who wants to be there on Sunday. In fact, if estimates of how many people are heading into the city for the weekend are true, 16 Anfields wouldn’t be enough. No problem though; the city is ready to showcase its unique, welcoming spirit and show how it throws a party, as the Reds' heroes show that trophy off from the top of a bus! The last match itself sees Liverpool host Crystal Palace. With both teams in a celebratory mood (Palace fresh from their own FA Cup triumph), Jay and Jim are wondering if it’s even worth bothering with the footy itself. Jim and Jay reflect on a season where Liverpool exceeded expectations to clinch that title, but with transfer windows set to open, work needs to be done to ensure new expectations are met. No Red expected Slot to be so successful so soon - but all Reds want more of the same. The hosts briefly discuss some of the transfer rumours swirling around potential incomings like Frimpong and Kerkez, and possible departures including the respected Joe Gomez and potentially Darwin Nunez. Since the show was recorded, rumours about Florian Wirtz leaving Germany for Merseyside have gathered pace, but until he’s had his photo holding up his new shirt, Jay and Jim are assuming nothing. There's also discussion on manager Arne Slot's latest press conference, particularly his comments on Trent Alexander-Arnold's training and defensive application, and how the media has portrayed this. The hosts touch on how Trent might be received and the importance of focusing on the collective celebration. What advice would the hosts give Arne, if he asked, on how to handle this last bit with Trent? As for that victory parade, the hosts offer some tips for fans wanting to catch a glimpse of the champions. It's a time to savour the moment, celebrate a hard-won title, and look forward to what the future holds for the Reds. As always, there’s plenty to laugh about from across the park, although you aren’t likely to find any of them there as the A55 clogs up under the weight of a blue-tinged exodus to North Wales. Sunday will also mark the final match for George Sephton, the iconic 'Voice of Anfield'. His voice has boomed around Anfield for decades, since the days the Reds were winning titles almost every season. He really is and has been part of Anfield - he’s been there for the good times and the bad, and it really won’t be the same without him. Thanks for everything, George, from all of us. The Reds went into the campaign expected to once again compete with Manchester City for the title. Many fans were using their free bets - or online casino gratis...

Against the backdrop of FSG putting the...

Who Could Replace Joe Gomez Next Summer?

I wrote a piece earlier in the season in relation to Joe Gomez. It was centred around the notable talents this England international possesses, and how his former place in the starting line up could be regained, especially with the injuries to Ibou & Matip. You can see the link here, but unfortunately for...

All Change at The Back This Summer: 2 In, 2 Out

There’s always one attribute for elite players that can get ignored - availability. Consistency is the obvious one that gets mentioned and often used as an argument against footballers when debating their level. Liverpool fans could see both those charges levied against a couple of their centre backs right now and it would be...

Could Frenkie de Jong be Liverpool’s midfield saviour?

There have been endless reasons for Liverpool's struggles this season, but their midfield has stood out as a major problem from the moment the campaign got underway. For a long time, the middle of the park was the Reds' most solid and underrated area of the pitch, with the headlines invariably made by everyone else...

The first 5 days of the World Cup are now complete, and there's been no lack of excitement. We've seen Qatar embarrassed in their opening match, both members of the 2014 final beaten by Asian teams, and a Keylor Navas performance so bad that Alvaro Morata couldn't make him look good. Drama has been...

Liverpool’s Loan Window In January

There's been a lot of focus on the January transfer window in the last couple of weeks, with fans demanding that Liverpool sign pretty much any man under the age of 23 who's ever laced up a pair of boots. Moses Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez, Jude Bellingham, Cody Gakpo, and Konrad Laimer are all names...

Liverpool Players Who Could Break Into The Euro 2024 England Squad

With England having successfully dispatched Iran 6-2 in their opening game, it gave the nation a spirited start to an otherwise strange World Cup tournament. The winter break seems bizarre, the one love arm band debate is on going, but in between we saw the three lions turn out a pretty ruthless and efficient...

David Johnson “The Assassin” – An Underrated Liverpool Legend

David Johnson always suffered by comparison with the man who replaced him. Over the years dozens of conversations about the great 1978-79 team have included the line, “Imagine if Rushie would have been a couple of years older.” Johnson’s contribution to the club has too often been overlooked. He was an international-class performer and that...

What If Klopp Were To Leave After The Liverpool Buyout…

When FSG announced the club was for sale, there was a moment of surprise, a period of browsing social media, a few group message checks, and finally the wonderment of what we could become. We have been fantastically successful under our current owners, and despite the on-going grumblings of discontent, we couldn’t have won...

Christopher Nkunku – Time To Take Hijack Chelsea’s Attempts to Sign Him

Naby Keïta, Ibrahima Konaté and Takumi Minamino are all players that have been recruited from the RB group, either from Salzburg or Leipzig. We have also seen multiple stories linking us with various other players, and if not for COVID, we probably would have signed Timo Werner ahead of his move to Chelsea. The...

Goalkeepers LFC Should Target If Adrián Leaves

Liverpool's first game back after the World Cup is in not the Premier League, but the 4th round EFL tie against Manchester City. This game will represent the ideal tune up to the Reds' Boxing Day visit to Villa Park, and getting Pep Guardiola’s side in the last 16 is the perfect draw for...

Should Liverpool sign Moisés Caicedo?

It’s no secret that Liverpool is looking to strengthen its midfield. The emergency loan signing of Arthur from Juventus came after a summer attempting to sign Aurélien Tchouaméni from Monaco. Once that was made impossible by the Frenchman’s move to Real Madrid, Jurgen Klopp said many times to the media that while he was...

Contract Rebel Central Midfielders To Target In the Summer Of 2023

We haven’t even gotten into the January transfer window yet, but with any elite and proactive sporting group, forward thinking is vital for future success. Carvalho: Too Early to Call it, but Limited Chances to Shine

It can be tough as a youngster in Liverpool’s first team squad. For all the talk about the crowd being forgiving and encouraging youth, the first half of the campaign has meant that the pressures of reality have seen that forgotten on occasions. Time and patience tend to give way to instant judgement and...
