SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid return for a new episode of Scouser Tommies, looking ahead to the pre-season tour and the season itself, as well as discussing the latest transfer stories. First of all, however, is the first chance for Jay and Jim to talk about the shocking and sudden loss of Diogo Jota. They discuss the impact of his passing on the club – players, coaches, staff, and fans – and even the wider footballing world. The club’s handling of the tragedy has been perfect, including the decision to retire Diogo’s No. 20 shirt, and it has been moving to see just how far and wide the tributes have come from. The Reds have now returned to action, with their first pre-season game a win over Preston last weekend. As Jay explains, it was odd to see the players still wearing last season’s shirts, but Nike have clearly stuck to their guns over their contract with the Reds. It won’t be until after the tour of Japan that we see our players donning the new Adidas offerings – not that it’s stopped said shirts from appearing elsewhere. The recruitment team at Anfield have already been busy this summer, mostly with players coming in, and the latest stories suggest there is still plenty of money available to spend. Jim and Jay discuss what this might mean for next season in terms of challenging on all fronts. With PSR (Profitability and Sustainability Rules) still in place, clubs are going to have to be more careful about how and when they spend their money. However, it seems Liverpool have plenty of headroom given the stadium expansion, strong commercial performance, and even stronger on-pitch performance. Not spending money for the sake of it last summer hasn’t done any harm either. Money isn’t everything, of course, and whilst plenty of it is still needed to sign players of the quality required to improve Liverpool, there’s far more to signing for the Reds than that. To fit in at Anfield, money would not be the clincher for the right kind of player. Jay and Jim talk about why playing at Anfield will be such a draw for potential new signings, and why it might just be what makes it so difficult for other clubs to hold onto their stars. Patience – Liverpool Shouldn’t Rush Ox’s Return

Liverpool fans were devastated when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain picked his serious knee ligament injury against Roma in April. Despite having been playing regularly for the club for less than six months, Ox had already demonstrated that he was a crucial part of the Reds’ midfield, adding a dynamism and energy that made a real difference,...

100 Years of Bob Paisley and the Danger of Comparisons

Before the home win at Crystal Palace—a game which saw Red hearts beat all the faster for the first time in a while—the ground paid tribute to Bob Paisley, who was born 100 years ago this week. At half-time, Anfield witnessed a cavalcade of his best players such as Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness, Jimmy...

Why the defence still remains Klopp’s problem area

When Jürgen Klopp arrived on Merseyside back in October 2015, it's fair to say that there were quite a few problems that the German tactician had to tend to. Over the course of the last three-and-a-bit years, it's fair to say that he's done a very good job and has completely turned Liverpool around in...

Yogi Herr: Klopp Proving To Be Smarter Than The Average Manager

Six foot four, grizzly, often found near benches. The majority of the population, when given that description, would think of a certain park custodian with an affinity for stealing picnic baskets: Yogi Bear. In the world of football, though, one’s mind drifts towards only one man, Jurgen Klopp. Charismatic and always looking to share a...

11 Day Break At The Right Time For Bruised Reds

Liverpool survived an incredible game of football to see off Crystal Palace 4-3 at Anfield. But it was a game that left the already struggling Reds bloodied, bruised and increasingly threadbare, with Rafa Camacho finishing the game at right-back, Bobby Firmino and Adam Lallana in central midfield, and Joël Matip played his first full...

From a Weakness to a Strength: How Liverpool Finally Solved Their Left-Back Problem

Liverpool have had their fair share of dross players over the years: Antonio Nunez, Christian Poulsen and Milan Jovanovic roll straight off the tongue, for example. Indeed, the last few years have produced some teams with a dearth of star quality, culminating in frustrating league finishes and forgettable campaigns. The left-back role arguably provides the...

Key Stats As The Front Three Deliver Again vs Palace

Mo Salah scored twice as the front three combined to fire Liverpool past a resilient and excellent Crystal Palace side to keep Liverpool motoring in their title bid. But what were the key stats from a frenetic 4-3 win at Anfield? A Tale of Two Milners James Milner isn’t a right-back. We knew that already, but...

Liverpool 4-3 Crystal Palace: A Tactical Breakdown

Roy Hodgson and Crystal Palace. Hardly a fear-inspiring combination. Yet against Liverpool, and at Anfield, Hodgson's Crystal Palace were the first team in the league this season to score 3 goals against Liverpool. If anything this game only served to prove how nothing can be taken as given, with Milner receiving a red card,...

Liverpool 4 Palace 3: Boss Saturday Sees Reds Seven Clear, For Now

Tell you what, I’m spent after that one. Maybe a drink and some Springsteen lyrics can help us all mellow out. Why Bruce? He's The Boss and we're boss, so... Lights out tonight Trouble in the heartland Got a head-on collision Smashin' in my guts, man... How were your intestines holding up after that one? Plenty of experienced Liverpool...

Who was Man of the Match in mad Anfield win over Palace?

What can you say after a win like that? No, really, why did it have to go back to Liverpool giving heart attacks again? It was all going along smoothly; managing games, keeping clean sheets, winning serenely. Why revert to old Liverpool? Well, it was a one-off. That's for certain, at least based on the...

Observations as Liverpool Do It The Hard Way vs Palace

Liverpool hung on in a pulsating, incredible game against Crystal Palace at Anfield to keep the pressure on Man City by going seven points clear. Here are the observations from an unbelievable 4-3 win on a cold Saturday afternoon at Anfield. Win At All Costs It’s impossible not to look at a game like this, where...

Player ratings as the Reds go all 2013-14 on us

I've got a good friend who supports Crystal Palace. If I didn't, I'd be doing rain dances in the garden in the hope they get relegated. Never mind the owl that manages them, they're actually an alright club. Passionate fans, decent football, the legend that is Mamadou Sakho. I just can't hack playing them, I'm...

Can Luck Finally Benefit Liverpool In A Title Race?

Both Liverpool and Man City fans are being accused of having luck on their side this season, as the immature back-and-forth between the supporters continues. For every City fan calling Mo Salah a 'diver', there is a Liverpool supporter incredulous that Vincent Kompany wasn't sent-off against the Reds, or that Wolves centre-back Willy Boly was...

How Klopp Has Made a Weapon of Versatility

“He is a brilliant player and I am happy that he can play…he has a defending brain and can do it in different positions, it’s good.” Klopp said of Fabinho following his impressive performance at centre back against Brighton. It was a performance emblematic of Klopp’s plans coming to fruition. Indeed, if the Reds’ title challenge...

Liverpool’s Defence Is More Than VVD and Alisson

It’s true that Virgil Van Dijk is the best centre-back in the league. It’s true that his impact on this Liverpool team has been absolutely tremendous, and it’s true that his signing is one of the best that Liverpool have made in years. Likewise, it’s true that buying Alisson Becker was an absolutely crucial piece...

Why Judging Mané and Firmino By Goals Scored is Foolish

While Mohamed Salah once again stole all of the headlines in Liverpool's latest win over Brighton at the Amex Stadium at the weekend, it can be quite easy for criticism to be drawn to his attacking colleagues as to their contributions to goals this season. Jürgen Klopp's revered front three draw plaudits the world over...

Commander Klopp

A mild wind blows through the open roof, seagulls squawking high above as the distant sea air fills the nostrils. Sprinklers twist and turn, sending water spritzing in dancing circles. Neatly trimmed grass clipped and groomed to perfection. The netting rustling as it is tightened on opposite ends. A pristine field. The perfect place for battle....

Should Liverpool keep Daniel Sturridge?

The striker’s contract is due to expire in the summer. Many fans are divided on whether to offer Daniel Sturridge a new contract or let him go for free. So, what shall it be? The England international has been at Liverpool for six years this month since January 2013. Yes, he has been injury prone, but...

Conservative Reds Show Substance Over Style

There was a moment in the first half of Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Brighton where Gini Wijnaldum picked the ball up 20/25 yards from goal, assessed his options, passed the ball sideways to Jordan Henderson, who promptly gave the ball back to Wijnaldum, only for Gini to turn around and pass the ball 40...

Brighton 0-1 Liverpool: A Tactical Breakdown

When it comes to stifling Liverpool's attacking ability this season, Chris Hughton's Brighton side has probably been one of the most successful. In the league match at Anfield, it was a single mistake - through taking a short free-kick inside their own half, and allowing themselves to be pressed - which was punished. Apart...

Brighton 0-1 Liverpool: Who was man of the match?

Grinding out a win when not at your best is a mark of champions, according to the old footballing axiom. Brighton made life difficult for Liverpool on Saturday afternoon, but when the Reds found the breakthrough their game-management was superb. It was a pedestrian first-half performance for the visitors, who predictably encountered a compact and...

Observations as Liverpool get the job done at the AMEX

Sleepy Seagull Saturday keeps Liverpool on title path

A sleepy Saturday saw Liverpool cruise to another win and our 57th point of the season; 1 short of our full season totals in 04/05 and 10/11, already having surpassed the 98/99 and 11/12 totals.  The fact that we’re climbing the list of Liverpool’s top Premier League point totals in the middle of January...

Player Ratings as Liverpool get back to winning ways

The result means Klopp's side are now seven points clear at the top, with Manchester City playing Wolves on Monday night. Here are the ratings from the match. Alisson - 6 Didn't have a save...

Liverpool And The Coutinho Dilemma

I don’t like people messing about with Liverpool Football Club. In the same way others think that ancient scriptures should not be tampered with and that the word of the deities to which they sing should be unbendable, I am of the mind that no one should meddle with the central ethos of the club...

Liverpool Fans – It’s Okay to Hope, This is Why We’re Here

It’s not the hope that kills you. It’s never the hope that kills you. Languishing in mediocrity, having to play in Macedonia on a miserly Thursday night, with aspirations of only being relevant again, that’s what kills you. Being nowhere, existing but not prospering, that’s what kills you. Seeing your best players leave, that’s what kills...

Ageism Is Working Against James Milner

When a footballer hits 30, or at least in and around that age, something instantly changes in the way they are perceived by supporters. Every bad performance is suddenly due to their advancing years, every misplaced pass is because they’re not as young as they once were and they are used as target practice every...
