Scouser Tommies: End Of This Line

Scouser Tommies: End Of This Line

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are back and feeling a little bit bruised after an event that hasn’t happened since Paul Konchesky was the star of Roy Hodgson’s version of LFC. Meanwhile, as what has been an amazing ride under Jurgen Klopp stutters towards the end, it sounds like Liverpool have lined up his successor. There are mixed feelings from fans about Arne Slot as the next boss of Liverpool but as Jay and Jim discuss, all they have been hearing – from people who know Dutch football and know Liverpool – points to him being exactly who the Reds need. It certainly feels like there’s something to look forward to after a few weeks no Reds want to look back at. A rare derby defeat at Goodison Park has left the blue quarter of Liverpool parading around like they’ve won a trophy and the rest of us feeling like we’ve lost three. Everton invited their neighbours to their now traditional just-avoided-relegation party this year, and Liverpool brought gifts. The neighbours will say they ended the Reds’ title hopes, but Liverpool were already done. All good things must come to an end and in football they often end before they are mathematically impossible, so whilst at the time of recording there was still a theoretical chance of the title, the miracles required were way too far-fetched. Especially when one of them was for Liverpool to find their form again. So Klopp wasn’t to get his fairy-tale ending, but maybe now the pressure is off and the players he puts out could try and entertain us instead of everyone else. Next up is a trip to West Ham, and our old mate David Moyes, so the potential is definitely there for the nightmare to continue. Especially if we dwell too much on the fact that there is still a mathematical chance that Liverpool don’t qualify for the Champions League. It’s not the best of endings to the last season under the German, but it does still end with a trophy, and there is still time to settle some scores on the pitch. Learn more about your ad choices. Former Liverpool and England striker Emile Heskey believes Jude Bellingham has the talent to become a global superstar over the next few years. The Borussia Dortmund midfielder has been strongly linked with a move to Liverpool after repeatedly showcasing his quality for club and country over the past couple of seasons. The 19-year-old has been […]

In our five-part series, we take a look at potential candidates to replace Julian Ward this summer as sporting director. Following on from Paul Mitchell our second candidate sees us stay in Europe, but move to the landlocked nation of Austria and the famous Red Bull set-up in Salzburg. It would be an ambitious move […]

I wrote a piece earlier in the season in relation to Joe Gomez. It was centred around the notable talents this England international possesses, and how his former place in the starting line up could be regained, especially with the injuries to Ibou & Matip. You can see the link here, but unfortunately for our […]

Every Current & Former Liverpool Player at this World Cup Much like every other World Cup in recent history, Liverpool has a large contingent of current and former players booting up for their countries. From former stars to fringe players, this World Cup has them all. If you’re a big fan of Premier League betting, […]

There’s always one attribute for elite players that can get ignored – availability. Consistency is the obvious one that gets mentioned and often used as an argument against footballers when debating their level. Liverpool fans could see both those charges levied against a couple of their centre backs right now and it would be very […]

There have been endless reasons for Liverpool’s struggles this season, but their midfield has stood out as a major problem from the moment the campaign got underway. For a long time, the middle of the park was the Reds’ most solid and underrated area of the pitch, with the headlines invariably made by everyone else […]

The first 5 days of the World Cup are now complete, and there’s been no lack of excitement. We’ve seen Qatar embarrassed in their opening match, both members of the 2014 final beaten by Asian teams, and a Keylor Navas performance so bad that Alvaro Morata couldn’t make him look good. Drama has been aplenty, […]

There’s been a lot of focus on the January transfer window in the last couple of weeks, with fans demanding that Liverpool sign pretty much any man under the age of 23 who’s ever laced up a pair of boots. Moses Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez, Jude Bellingham, Cody Gakpo, and Konrad Laimer are all names that […]

With England having successfully dispatched Iran 6-2 in their opening game, it gave the nation a spirited start to an otherwise strange World Cup tournament. The winter break seems bizarre, the one love arm band debate is on going, but in between we saw the three lions turn out a pretty ruthless and efficient display. […]

David Johnson always suffered by comparison with the man who replaced him. Over the years dozens of conversations about the great 1978-79 team have included the line, “Imagine if Rushie would have been a couple of years older.” Johnson’s contribution to the club has too often been overlooked. He was an international-class performer and that […]
