The Transfer Show: Defensive Targets Vanishing as Liverpool Wait

As Liverpool delay major recruitment until the summer, Trev Downey and Dave Davis examine the danger of watching defensive targets slip away. From Guéhi’s move to Manchester City to Chelsea’s pursuit of Jacquet, they discuss how the market is thinning rapidly. The conversation covers Liverpool’s interest in Van de Ven and Bastoni, concerns over price, injuries and tactical fit, and the unresolved futures of Konaté and Robertson. This cut highlights the risk of entering the summer needing multiple defenders in a market where elite options are already being removed. Learn more about your ad choices. The Transfer Show: Hanging Out for the Summer at Liverpool

Host Trev Downey is joined by Dave Davis to explain why Liverpool’s January window was always expected to be quiet and why all serious planning has been pushed towards the summer. Drawing on recent Joyce and Steele reporting, they discuss looming contract issues involving Curtis Jones, Mohamed Salah and key decision-makers at the club, alongside the growing sense of inevitable squad churn. This is a grounded breakdown of why Liverpool believe the current group can get them into the Champions League, and why that belief is making supporters increasingly uneasy. Scouser Tommies: GREASY HANDS

Scouser Tommies: GREASY HANDS

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are back to sift through the ups and downs of another strange week for the Reds. From the exasperation of a boring draw at home against Burnley to the satisfaction of a job well done in Marseille. Which version of LFC will turn up next? What we hope for and what we get might not be the same. The unbeaten run continues but what we saw at the weekend is nowhere near what any Liverpool fan wants to see, as a loud if not sizeable minority made clear at the end of the game. The frustration is understandable, and if you’ve bought your ticket you can make noise in whatever way you choose, but Jim reckons it’s a bit early to be shouting from the stands, pantomime style, it’s not what we do. As Jay points out, the vast majority of Reds fans in the ground were just as frustrated, given the conversations underway as they made their way out of the ground. Sometimes it’s better to be quiet if you’ve nothing positive to shout about. Which goes a long way to explaining why Anfield is so quiet this season. There will no doubt be some claiming that the jeers spurred Slot and his players on to victory in the Champions League, but it’s more likely to be because the opposition didn’t play the low block that most of the world now knows is Arne’s kryptonite. With the Reds’ next opponents not known for using it, is there a chance that Liverpool could register their first league win of 2026? It’s not just the results. It’s not just the annoyance at seeing everyone above Liverpool slip up and missing out on capitalising on it. It’s not just the constant use of stats to justify another awful game. It’s getting boring to watch Liverpool, with the “crab football”, as Jay puts it, showing no signs of going away. The signs of how good Liverpool can be, the injection of threat from fullbacks being able to play out wide and create, the invention of Dom at set pieces, the continued prowess of the man between the sticks, is all great to see, a boost after the boos. But then you glance at the league table and see what’s been thrown away. Also this week there’s time to have a quick look at the football equivalent of the "Rich List" and the oddities of how the different Premier League clubs’ turnover is broken down. The hosts can’t think why one club might have half the matchday revenue of their rival Premier League clubs, while bringing in far more from sponsorship and commercial. The figures also serve as a reminder of one of the major reasons it is vital to qualify for the Champions League. Money, in case you were wondering. The new Champions League format makes it very difficult not to get into the knockout phase, and a win at home in the last fixture of the league phase will mean the Reds make the last 16. At that point, if the draw is kinder than last year, it’s not out of the question that Liverpool go all the way. But if that journey is running alongside a continued inability to win games in the league it could be a bizarre situation this summer. A nice problem to have, of course, but there’s still a long way to go. Meanwhile it’s probably all been a bit confusing for the neighbours. You win a match, but you help your most hated enemy close the gap above them. You think you’re helping your old mate accelerate to glory, but they fall over too. Learn more about your ad choices. Liverpool midfielder believes Sheffield United win gives Reds much-needed confidence before facing Chelsea later this week

Liverpool star Gini Wijnaldum is hopeful his side's victory at Sheffield United could be the start of a winning streak for The Reds. A goal from Curtis Jones and a deflected effort by Bobby Firmino gave Liverpool all three points at Bramall Lane on Sunday night. The Reds controlled much of the game from start to...

Liverpool’s midfield vs Chelsea: A selection headache at long last

There was much to admire about Liverpool's 2-0 victory over Sheffield United, as the Reds made a welcome return to winning ways. Adrian, Nat Phillips and Ozan Kabak largely did well against a physical Blades attack, while Trent Alexander-Arnold looked somewhere close to his best again. Gini Wijnaldum and Thiago purred in midfield, the front-three looked...

Liverpool’s New Shape

To put it bluntly, Liverpool dominated Sheffield United. In previous games against the Blades, it’s been a struggle and the Reds have needed to dig deep to eke out wins. This game wasn’t like that, though. It finished 2-0 but it could’ve easily have been 5-0. In fact, it probably should’ve been.  Jurgen Klopp, to...

André-Frank Zambo Anguissa: A Potential Georginio Wijnaldum Replacement For Liverpool

Liverpool are laser-focused in the transfer market. They hone in on targets and fixate their interests in only signing them, even if they have to wait. This approach bore fruit with the signings of Virgil van Dijk and Naby Keita, who they had to six months and a year respectively to bring to Anfield. Another...

Klopp delights in “very big win” for Reds at Sheffield United

Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp was delighted with his side's match-winning performance against Sheffield United on Sunday night. Second-half goals from Curtis Jones and a deflected Bobby Firmino shot gave The Reds a much-needed 2-0 win and kept them well in the hunt for a top-four finish in the Premier League this season. At his post-match press...

Liverpool Defeat Blades In Comfortable Win

Liverpool moved within two points of fourth with a 2-0 victory away to Sheffield United. Goals from man of the match Curtis Jones and a deflected Roberto Firmino drive gave the Reds a richly deserved win at Bramall Lane. Were it not from the heroics of Aaron Ramsdale in the hosts' goals, the defending champions --...

Will this be Liverpool’s lineup to play Sheffield United on Sunday?

Liverpool travel to play Sheffield United in the Premier League this Sunday night. We've had a look at the possible starting eleven for The Reds. Jürgen Klopp's side currently sits in sixth place in the Premier League table, five points off West Ham and that coveted top-four spot. Liverpool have lost four consecutive league games...

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain: Trent’s understudy

Trent Alexander-Arnold is a problem for Liverpool. A good one, but, nevertheless, a problem. He’s a unique right-back and it means that whenever he doesn’t start, there’s a noticeable drop-off in quality and quite a shift in style.  The 22-year-old came through the ranks as a midfielder and it’s why he’s so comfortable when tasked...

Can Naby Keita help save Liverpool’s season?

It's fair to say Naby Keita hasn't set the world alight at Liverpool. Few players have joined with greater expectations on their shoulders than the Guinean when he arrived at Anfield in 2018, following a superb spell at RB Leipzig. The fact that Liverpool fans had to wait a whole year to see Keita in the...

Reds forward back in full training as Liverpool prepare for top-four slog between now and May

Liverpool's Diogo Jota returned to full training with the first-team squad at the club's AXA Training Centre this week. Jota has been out of action since picking up a knee injury in The Reds' 1-1 draw away to FC Midtjylland in their Champions League group clash back in December. The former Wolves forward had made...

Why Liverpool Fans Need To Kabak Ozan

Let's call a spade a spade: Ozan Kabak's opening two appearances in the Premier League for Liverpool have been nothing short of disastrous. In his debut, the Reds ruined a good performance and a 1-0 lead going into the final minutes of the game and eventually lost 3-1 to Leicester City, a defeat that could...

Former Reds defender believes Liverpool’s current form is “not acceptable”

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher claims Jürgen Klopp's team's current run of form is "not acceptable" after Merseyside derby defeat. Liverpool have fallen to sixth in the Premier League after a run of four consecutive defeats in the top flight. Speaking on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football show, Carragher explained why he believes that Liverpool should...

Tactical Breakdown: Liverpool 0-2 Everton

Carlo Ancelotti's Everton piled on more Merseyside misery for Liverpool, as they won by two goals at Anfield, their first away derby victory this century. The result displayed some of the impressive work Carlo Ancelotti has done with Everton, and drew upon aspects of the 0-0 draw following the restart, last season. Systems Liverpool utilised their...

Liverpool forward set to return to full training this week as Reds look to bounce back from derby defeat

Liverpool's Diogo Jota is expected to resume full first-team training this week, providing a much-needed boost for The Reds. Jürgen Klopp's side lost 2-0 at home to Everton on Saturday evening in their first derby defeat at Anfield in over 21 years. There was more bad news in that game as captain Jordan Henderson went off...

Heavy metal football and squad dynamics

To say Liverpool are in a rut would be an understatement. The Reds are in unchartered territory under Jurgen Klopp having lost four consecutive home games. They’re without a Premier League win in February and they’re five points off the top four with just 13 matches remaining. If Everton and Aston Villa win their...

Mohamed Salah: Liverpool’s Underestimated Leader

Leadership comes in many forms. When you mention the word in the context of Liverpool, several names come to mind. Jordan Henderson, James Milner, and Virgil van Dijk -- three of the four members of the first team's leadership group, along with Georginio Wijnaldum -- are all associated with being leaders, whether that's through their...

Jamie Carragher Says Thiago Alcantara Isn’t To Blame For Liverpool’s Slump

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has rubbished the accusations levelled against Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara, with the former Bayern Munich midfielder having come under fire for slowing the team’s play down. Writing his column for the Telegraph, Carragher claimed the Spain international was a luxury Liverpool never thought they would be afforded. While Carragher accepts...

Klopp admits to feeling “a lot” of hurt after Anfield derby defeat

Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp could not hide his disappointment after his side's Merseyside derby defeat against Everton on Saturday evening. An early goal from Richarlison gave The Toffees the lead before a late Gylfi Sigurðsson penalty sealed the win for Carlo Ancelotti's side. It was Everton's first derby win in almost 11 years and their first...

Injuries aside, Liverpool’s lack of fight and mentality is inexcusable

Just when you thought you'd pretty much seen it all this season, the unthinkable happens. Everton's first win at Anfield since 1999, combined with a hammer blow of an injury to Jordan Henderson and what was, at best, an abject performance saw Liverpool's season plummet to a new low. This was a fourth straight defeat at...

Laboured Liverpool Fall To Anfield Defeat To Everton

Liverpool fell to their first Anfield Merseyside derby league defeat to Everton since 1999 after a 2-0 reversal against their neighbours. The loss means the defending champions have now lost four home league games on the spin. Goals from Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurðsson condemned the Reds to defeat after an insipid, lifeless performance from the...

Liverpool 0-2 Everton: What went wrong in first derby defeat for 11 years?

Nothing lasts forever. It had been 22 years since Everton had won at Anfield. I was less than a month old. And of course it was going to be this season, this god-forsaken, gut-punch season, that the Blues' drought came to an end. Liverpool fans were united in their incandescence when a quite unfathomable penalty...

Liverpool’s ‘crisis’ merits criticism but not an overreaction

So apparently football really does determine your mood. After an awful run of results for Liverpool, they roared back on Tuesday night, making a formidable RB Leipzig side look as average as a mid-table Premier League side. That weight was instantly lifted, whether it be for Jurgen Klopp, his players or the supporters, as the Reds...

Champions League glory can make shattered Reds whole again

Few experiences in life can hurt football fans as much as crushing disappointment does. The pain of falling short of an intended achievement may sound manageable on paper, but when it concerns the football club you have followed devotedly your entire life, the hurt goes deep and is exceptionally raw. Something that Liverpool fans were...

Tactical Breakdown: RB Leipzig 0-2 Liverpool

Liverpool won 2-0 in their round of 16 away tie against RB Leipzig to make them favourites to progress to the quarter-finals. In some ways, Julian Nagelsmann's side was a welcome opponent, with their expansive, aggressive and calculated-risk based play. Leipzig offered a very different tactical proposition to the majority of Liverpool's recent opponents, with...

In Defence of Thiago Alcantara

It's hard to believe that it has come to this, but Thiago Alcantara is underrated. The summer 2020 signing from FC Bayern has lazily and ridiculously been pigeonholed as a player who slows down Liverpool's play and whose style of play is incongruous with Jurgen Klopp's intense style of football. Even a cursory glance at the...

“With time, I will be better” – Liverpool defender expects to build on solid Champions League performance

Liverpool defender Ozan Kabak believes his performance in The Reds' 2-0 win over RB Leipzig was only the beginning as far as his career on Merseyside is concerned. Kabak put in a solid performance at centre-half alongside captain Jordan Henderson as Jürgen Klopp's men kept their first clean sheet in 8 games. The win puts...

Liverpool FC’s Priority: Keeping Jurgen Klopp

The rumour that Jürgen Klopp had walked burned around social media, after Leicester's defeat of Liverpool. Klopp’s appearance at Liverpool training, the next morning, dispelled the speculation. However, the brief uncertainty surrounding the German revealed a simple truth: Supporting Jurgen Klopp is Liverpool FC’s highest priority.   2021 has been torrid for the iconic manager....
