William Gomes, Liverpool and FC Porto’s £100m Message to Europe
FC Porto have made their move, and they have made it with clarity. William Gomes, one of the brightest young wide players in Portugal, has signed a new contract until 2031, with his release clause raised from €80 million to €100 million. As reported by A Bola, that renewal says plenty about how highly Porto rate the Brazilian and how seriously they are preparing for interest from abroad.
At 20, William Gomes has built on the promise of last season and carried that momentum into the new campaign. Porto’s decision places him in elite company within the squad, alongside Samu and Borja Sainz, both also protected by €100 million clauses. It is a familiar signal from a club that has long understood the value of timing, leverage and patience in the transfer market.

Liverpool interest remains in focus
The key detail for English eyes is that Liverpool remain attentive. With Mohamed Salah having left in the summer, Liverpool addressed the attacking flanks by bringing in Bradley Barcola and Víctor Muñoz. Even so, the profile of William Gomes appears to retain appeal because he is a natural right winger, a specialist in a role that still invites close scrutiny at Anfield.
There is a wider context here, too. Liverpool are due to face Porto in the Champions League in December, which adds another layer of intrigue around a player already firmly on recruitment radars. Clubs at the top end of the game do not stop scanning just because business has been done, and Liverpool’s continued admiration suggests William Gomes has qualities that stand apart.
Porto protect a rising asset
Porto hold 80 per cent of the player’s economic rights, with São Paulo retaining the remaining 20 per cent. That split makes the new deal even more significant. Porto have protected their position before the next rounds of market noise arrive, and they have done so from a position of strength.
André Villas-Boas underlined that stance when he said: “Estamos contentes com o trajeto do William, por isso quisemos vê-lo reforçado. Tem despertado a cobiça de muitos clubes e nós não ficamos indiferentes a isso, mas o seu compromisso com o FC Porto tem sido total”.
For now, William Gomes looks fully committed to Porto. His return of two goals and two assists in nine matches this season points to a player growing in confidence, authority and importance. Porto have drawn a line at €100 million. The rest of Europe, Liverpool included, now know the price of the conversation.
Our View
From a Liverpool supporter’s perspective, this is the sort of report that sparks curiosity rather than certainty. William Gomes sounds like a profile worth watching closely, a young, natural right winger with end product, pace and enough reputation for Porto to slap a €100 million clause on him. That alone does not mean a deal is around the corner, but it does suggest Liverpool’s recruitment team see something in him that fits a longer-term plan.
The interesting part is the role. Liverpool have already added Bradley Barcola and Víctor Muñoz, yet if the club are still looking at William Gomes, it may point to a desire for a more orthodox right-sided attacker. Squad building at elite level is rarely about one transfer solving everything. It is about options, balance and making sure different game states can be attacked in different ways.
There is also the Porto factor. They are seasoned operators in this market and they do not hand out these renewals by accident. If Liverpool are serious, they will know this would be an expensive and complicated pursuit. Still, those are often the deals top clubs have to explore if they believe a player can become world class. For now, this feels more like a name to circle than a move to expect immediately, but it is a fascinating one all the same.
