Fenerbahçe vs Liverpool – Champions League Preview
Date: Wednesday, 4th November 2026
Venue: Chobani Stadium, Istanbul
Kick-off: 17:45 GMT
Following a disappointing Premier League defeat against Arsenal at Anfield, Liverpool return to Champions League action with a trip to Turkey to face Fenerbahçe.
Andoni Iraola’s side have made an excellent start to their European campaign, winning all three opening league-phase fixtures against Atlético Madrid, LASK and Villarreal. Those victories have demonstrated Liverpool’s attacking potential, although the goals conceded have highlighted areas that still require attention.
This fixture offers an opportunity to maintain that perfect European record while giving several squad players valuable minutes.
There is also an interesting subplot, with former Liverpool forward Dirk Kuyt now taking charge of Fenerbahçe on an interim basis. The Dutchman knows Anfield and the club extremely well, having spent six seasons on Merseyside, and will be keen to make an impression against his former employers.
Fenerbahçe have struggled in Europe so far, collecting just two points from their opening three matches. However, playing in front of their passionate home support in Istanbul presents a very different challenge, and Liverpool should not underestimate the atmosphere awaiting them.

Predicted Liverpool XI
Formation: 4-2-3-1
GK – Giorgi Mamardashvili
RB – Joe Gomez
CB – Ronald Araújo
CB – Virgil van Dijk (c)
LB – Kostas Tsimikas
CM – Trey Nyoni
CM – Dominic Szoboszlai
AM – James McConnell
RW – Rio Ngumoha
LW – Víctor Muñoz
CF – Lewis Koumas
I expect Iraola to make changes for this fixture, balancing the need to maintain Liverpool’s European momentum with the demands of a busy schedule.
Giorgi Mamardashvili should come into the side, while Joe Gomez and Kostas Tsimikas offer opportunities to rotate the full-back positions. Ronald Araújo and Virgil van Dijk would provide experience and physical presence at the heart of the defence.
In midfield, Trey Nyoni could partner Dominic Szoboszlai, with James McConnell operating further forward as the combative number 10. It would be an interesting selection, particularly given the ongoing questions surrounding Liverpool’s midfield balance and the personnel required to make the double pivot work effectively.
The attacking positions could provide opportunities for some of the younger players. Rio Ngumoha and Víctor Muñoz offer pace and direct running from wide areas, while Lewis Koumas would be given an opportunity to lead the line.
This is precisely the type of fixture where Liverpool need to make use of their squad depth. The younger players have shown encouraging signs, but they must also demonstrate that they can deliver in a demanding European away environment.
We’ve beaten Brentford, Bournemouth, Brighton, Chelsea. And outplayed the best team in the prem last night. I didn’t expect us to be this far in Oct/Nov. Very excited to see where Iraola takes us #LFC

The Final Word
This is a game Liverpool should approach with confidence, but certainly not complacency.
Fenerbahçe will be desperate to improve their European standing and will view a home fixture against Liverpool as an opportunity to make a statement. Their supporters will create an intimidating atmosphere, and the Reds must be prepared to deal with an aggressive start.
For Liverpool, the priority should be to control the midfield, remain disciplined defensively and use the pace available in the wide areas. The recent Arsenal defeat demonstrated the difficulty of breaking down an organised defensive unit, and Iraola will want to see greater cohesion and patience in the final third.
The predicted changes should not mean a drop in ambition. Liverpool have won their opening three Champions League matches and have an opportunity to strengthen their position among the leading sides in the league phase.
I expect an entertaining contest, with both teams capable of creating problems. Liverpool have the greater quality, but the atmosphere in Istanbul and the home side’s need for points could make this a difficult evening.
Steven Smith’s Score Prediction:
Fenerbahçe 2–2 Liverpool
