Manchester City’s former Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan feels that Jurgen Klopp’s current Liverpool side is slightly better than that of Bayern Munich.
Gundogan was interviewed by SPORT BILD ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League tie with FC Bayern next Tuesday night. Although he was praising Liverpool, the German international admitted that it will be a tight affair over the two legs and Bayern can turn any team over at the Allianz Arena.
“I know how hard it is to play in Liverpool. So I honestly see Liverpool a bit ahead of Bayern. You can kindle a fire at Anfield, develop a momentum that is second to none. In 15 minutes, you can concede three goals.
“If Bayern survive in Liverpool, they will be able to beat any opponent at home.”
Gundogan also disclosed how he believes the Premier League is of a higher standard than the Bundesliga at the moment due to the strengths of the top six teams.
“For me, the Premier League is already clearly ahead of the Bundesliga. I still look at a lot in the Bundesliga.
“At the top, it may be on a similar level, but in Germany, we are talking about Bayern and Dortmund, in England Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea, Tottenham, Arsenal and us. That’s the main difference.”
Liverpool will have to try and build up a first-leg lead at Anfield without the services of star centre-back Virgil van Dijk. The Dutch international defender is suspended for the home fixture.
