Former Liverpool and Denmark midfielder Jan Molby believes that The Reds’ Jordan Henderson is sure to be remembered as a club great in years to come.
Henderson joined Liverpool from Sunderland eight years ago and he has had to endure a tough time in the spotlight since. The central midfielder has long been one of Liverpool’s most undervalued players.
However, Henderson was made club captain by Brendan Rodgers upon Steven Gerrard’s departure from the club in 2015 and was kept on in that role upon Jurgen Klopp’s arrival at Anfield later that same year.
Henderson was the man to lift Liverpool’s sixth European Cup when they beat Spurs in Madrid just over a week ago, writing his name into LFC folklore.
Anfield Index regular, Jan Molby, was speaking to Liverpoolfc.com when he highlighted the importance of Henderson’s role at the club and how his value is most likely to be appreciated most when his days in a Liverpool kit come to an end.
“It’s often overlooked how important these people are.
“But at Liverpool Football Club we’re very proud of our history and if you go through all of the great teams, we can all name the great players – but [also] the ones who were there every week, produced every week that, through history, become great players.
“Once Jordan is gone, people will look at the void that he leaves and think, ‘Oh wow’.”
Molby also discussed the resilience and strength of character Henderson has displayed over the years in the face of regular criticism, often from his own club’s supporters.
“He’s never been scared of sort of confronting the criticism he’s had – by that I mean, you go out and play your game.
“Some people try and change their play, other people buckle under that constant, ‘Can we get somebody better?’.
“That’s why when I didn’t play, I never knocked on the manager’s door. Because when you’re playing, you know why you’re playing. And when you’re not playing, you know why you’re not playing.
“The biggest compliment you can have as a player is if the manager keeps on picking you.”
Henderson is now the longest-serving player in the Liverpool squad and looks like he will be playing his part in Klopp’s plans for some more years to come.
