Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp gave an update on the fitness of Dutch pair Virgil van Dijk and Gini Wijnaldum ahead of The Reds’ Club World Cup semi-final clash with Mexican club Monterrey.
In general terms, the news was mainly positive about both Van Dijk and Wijnaldum. However, with regards to the Club World Cup in Qatar, it seems that Wijnaldum will miss Wednesday’s semi-final against Monterrey.
Thankfully, the rumoured Van Dijk issue seems to be a false alarm as Klopp confirmed the big number four is injury-free.
Talking at Liverpool’s pre-match press conference in Doha, Klopp said:
“Gini was not as serious as we thought in the first moment, so he’s here doing the first recovery and then we have stuff what is necessary.
“So we will see day by day but for tomorrow night he’s not involved.
“Virgil is fine. We had to do different stuff for recovery for different people, so that was the reason why he was not involved yesterday in the session, but Virgil is fine. All the rest of the squad is fine.”
Liverpool’s senior squad face Monterrey in Doha at 17:30 UK time on Wednesday. Win or lose, The Reds will have either a CWC final or 3rd place playoff to take part in then on Saturday.
Neil Critchley takes charge of the club’s youngsters as they face Aston Villa tonight in Birmingham in the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup.
