Liverpool’s Switzerland international Xherdan Shaqiri had a positive injury update for Reds fans today as the dust settled on another huge win for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
The Reds extended their Premier League lead to 16 points with a game in hand over Manchester City by beating the other side from Manchester 2-0 at Anfield on Sunday evening. Goals from Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah sealed the deal on a day when Klopp’s Redmen should have scored many more.
Today, Liverpool’s number 23, Xherdan Shaqiri, spoke to Liverpoolfc.com about his current fitness and when he expects to return to first-team action.
‘Shaq’ missed the weekend’s win over Manchester United having recently picked up a minor calf strain.
“It is just slight, I had a little problem in training. So I hope I might be back later this week. Let’s see, I cannot say now but it will be good if so.”
This means Shaqiri might be able to play some part in the FA Cup fixture at Shrewsbury Town next weekend. The Wolves game this Thursday night will probably come too soon for him. However, Shaqiri is trying to remain positive about the contribution he can make to Klopp’s plans between now and the end of the season.
“I didn’t have a lot of playing rhythm. I missed pre-season also and there were different reasons why I got some knocks maybe.
“I’m staying positive and I still try to have the opportunity to give my best and to help the team.”
Players like Divock Origi, Adam Lallana, James Milner, Xherdan Shaqiri and Takumi Minamino are sure to play an important role in the remaining months of the campaign. Liverpool look to be on their way to a 19th league title success while also still battling to retain their European crown from last season in the Champions League.
