Liverpool’s Curtis Jones couldn’t have been happier after captaining a young Reds side to FA Cup victory at Anfield on Tuesday night.
Neil Critchley’s U23s beat Shrewsbury Town 1-0 thanks to a late own-goal from Ro-Shaun Williams. The young Reds dominated the game in terms of possession and chances created, rarely looking out of their depth during the 90 minutes.
Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com after the momentous victory, Jones said:
“It’s an amazing feeling.
“The boys, the coaches, the staff that have trained all week have been absolutely unbelievable and it’s a proud moment for me to be the youngest player to captain the Reds. I’m happy that we topped it off with a win for our great fans.”
Jones disclosed the long-term dream he shares with fellow scouser Trent Alexander-Arnold
“As you can see, Trent’s dream is to captain the team, my dream is to captain the team and the rest of the players as well because it’s an unbelievable club. It’s got an unbelievable history, it’s got unbelievable fans and it’s an amazing feeling just to be out there and playing, but to captain the team is just an extra bit special.”
Next up in the FA Cup is a trip to face Frank Lampard’s Chelsea side in the fifth round. Jones believes plenty of the youngsters’ performances will give Jurgen Klopp some food for thought when picking his starting eleven at Stamford Bridge.
“We’ve got Chelsea next and I think a lot of the boys have given the manager a problem to pick a side really. I think all the boys put in a great shift and showed character, belief and everything that the manager looks for in his players. So we look forward to the next round and hopefully, it’s another win and we’ll just see how it goes from there.”
There is no Premier League action this weekend. Liverpool return against Norwich City at Carrow Road in the evening kick-off on Saturday, February 15th.
