Werner still Klopp's main target this summer - Reds hoping to negotiate lower price with RB Leipzig
Liverpool are still in the hunt for RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner in what has turned into one of the more drawn-out transfer sagas in recent years.
Jürgen Klopp has, according to reports in The Guardian, told the LFC board that Werner is a perfect fit for his first-team squad.
It is no secret that Anfield is Werner’s preferred next destination, despite interest from FC Bayern, Manchester United, Internazionale and others. However, Liverpool have still not tabled an official bid for the 24-year-old Germany international.
The Guardian’s report goes on to state that ‘they (Liverpool) are still keen to make the transfer happen and have been assured Werner will wait for Liverpool to make a decision before choosing his future club.’
Liverpool have until June 15th to meet Werner’s release clause fee of €60 million. Yet, it appears Klopp, Michael Edwards and co are hoping for a much-reduced fee due to the uncertainty of the transfer market in the current COVID-19 global pandemic.
Last Friday, Internazionale’s sporting director Piero Ausilio put paid to any hopes the Italian club’s fans had of seeing Werner join them this summer, stating:
“Timo Werner will not come to Inter. I know his thoughts about his future and we’ll not sign him. I love him as a player but we’ve never started talks to sign him.”
Werner has been in flying form all season and has scored four goals in four games since the Bundesliga’s restart in May, including a hat-trick in RB Leipzig’s 5-0 win at Mainz.
