Jürgen Klopp gave a brief injury update regarding Joe Gomez and Joël Matip after Liverpool’s win at Chelsea.
The Reds won 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Sunday in a game where Fabinho had to step in as centre-half to play alongside Virgil van Dijk. Thankfully, Fabinho could be relied on as per usual, putting in a man-of-the-match performance for Klopp’s side.
Gomez started Liverpool’s first Premier League game of the season against Leeds but was missing on Sunday after reportedly suffering a slight injury. With Matip already injured, Fabinho was called in to deputise.
Speaking after the game, Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com that Gomez should be available for the next game but Matip’s issue is likely to keep him out a little longer:
“Joe actually should be fine.
“It was not now really a big one but we have to see. We should be fine Monday already.
“With Joel, it could be slightly different. It’s not the worst thing in the world but a few weeks, a couple of weeks. Probably after the international break he will be ready again. So we have to see. It’s not cool.
“It’s crazy, in one day ‘bam bam’ but we have Fabinho and he played an exceptional game, so that was really, really nice.”
Up next for Liverpool is a trip to Lincoln City in the Carabao Cup third round this Thursday night. Gomez may be given some game time to knock off any rustiness before Arsenal visit Anfield next Monday. However, it’s possible the England international is not risked against Lincoln, given Liverpool’s lack of depth in the defence department.
