Jürgen Klopp gave Liverpool fans an update on the squad’s injury-list this week as The Reds prepare to start their Champions League campaign away to Dutch giants Ajax.
Virgil van Dijk will most likely miss the rest of the season after Jordan Pickford’s horror challenge on Saturday. Thiago Alcântara was also injured in the Everton game. Richarlison earned himself a straight red card for his late tackle on the Spain international midfielder late in the game.
Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com this week, Klopp confirmed that Thiago will face a fitness test this week to assess if he is fit to face Ajax.
“He got a knock, a proper knock.
“All the rest, we have to see. It’s not even close to being as serious [as Virgil van Dijk]. But will he be ready for Wednesday? I don’t know yet. We will see.”
Klopp also gave an update on Naby Keïta’s return after his positive COVID-19 test a couple of weeks ago, as well as the progress of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Alisson Becker’s rehabilitation.
“All good, really good.
“Naby trained yesterday, so that’s very positive. Oxlade is obviously in a long-term rehab, but looks good and is in a good mood usually. Ali looks very good. We have to see; catching balls and stuff like this is all possible. But we cannot rush it and will not rush it.
“Actually, it’s a common thing every day when I see Ali, I say: ‘How was it today?’ He always with a big smile tells me of the slight improvements. Today I didn’t see him [yet], so I can’t wait to ask for his progress!”
Liverpool kick-off against Ajax at 8pm in the Johan Cruijff ArenA, Amsterdam, on Wednesday night.
