Liverpool’s Diogo Jota scored a great headed goal to beat Sheffield United at the weekend. The Portugal international felt it was “a massive three points” for his new club.
Jürgen Klopp’s Reds had gone behind to a Sander Berge penalty after just 13 minutes when Fabinho was very harshly adjudged to have fouled Oliver McBurnie on the edge of the box.
Roberto Firmino equalised for Liverpool just before half time after Aaron Ramsdale could only parry Sadio Mané’s headed effort into the Brazilian’s path.
Mohamed Salah had a supremely-taken goal disallowed for offside just after the hour mark but just a minute later, Mané put in a fantastic cross that Jota rose to meet and head home in front of an empty Kop.
Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, Jota admitted it was a very difficult evening for The Reds:
“It was really hard for us.
“We knew how important it was to get back to winning ways after two games without a win in the Premier League and this game was really tough. We needed to come from behind so I think in the end it is a massive three points for us.
“We knew in the second half we needed to come with everything to score the second. We had chances, we had a goal disallowed, but we have to believe until the end and fortunately for us we grabbed the three points.”
Jota also commented on his wish to see fans back in grounds as soon as safely possible and the need for squad depth in what is sure to be a hectic season.
“Like I said before when I scored my first one, I just wish these stands could be full to make it even more special. But I think in the end the most important [thing] was that my goal was important to seal the victory, so I’m very pleased with that.
“It’s the calendar.
“I think that’s why we need everyone to stay fit, we need everyone to give his best. I think we go game by game but we know how hard it will be so it’s important for us to get the points.”
Liverpool return to action tomorrow (Tuesday) night with a home fixture against Danish side FC Midtjylland in the Champions League.
