Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah equalled club legend Steven Gerrard’s record of 21 goals in the Champions League with his strike against Atalanta.
The Reds won 5-0 in Bergamo with Diogo Jota grabbing a hat-trick and stealing the headlines for Jürgen Klopp’s side. Sadio Mané scored Liverpool’s other goal.
Salah scored a trademark goal, beating the Atalanta defence for speed when Liverpool broke from defending a corner. He kept his composure and finished brilliantly to nab his 21st goal for The Reds in Europe’s premier competition.
Speaking in his post-match interview, Salah said:
“Of course I’m very happy to be the highest one. Steven Gerrard is a legend for the club. It’s something I’m very proud of.
“But as I’ve said before, the most important thing is the team. So I’m happy to score goals to help the team to win games, that’s the most important thing.”
When asked about Liverpool’s prospects for the season and if they could lift the Champions League again, the Egyptian winger commented:
“It’s tough, I don’t want to put pressure on us.
“But I think we are doing good in the Premier League, we’re doing good in the Champions League. As Liverpool, as a team we have to fight for everything – that’s our job, that’s why we have to put pressure on ourselves.
“I’m sure we’re going to fight in each competition, in the Premier League as well. We want to win everything and hopefully, we can do it.”
Salah and co are now preparing for a huge Premier League clash against title rivals Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium this Sunday evening.
