Liverpool will look to get back on track when they face Newcastle United tonight at St James’ Park. We’ve had a look at The Reds’ likely starting lineup.
West Brom grabbed a share of the spoils in Liverpool’s last game on Sunday night. That 1-1 draw at Anfield will not have gone down well with Jürgen Klopp and his team so we could see a strong reaction at Newcastle.
Another negative to take from the West Brom game was the second-half injury to Joël Matip. It looks like the former Cameroon international will now be out for a number of weeks at least.
That means that Liverpool are currently without Matip, Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Diogo Jota, Kostas Tsimikas, Naby Keïta and Thiago Alcântara.
Thiago is inching closer to full fitness but will almost certainly not play any part against Newcastle.
Alisson Becker will continue in goals for Liverpool. Brazil’s number 1 again showed his worth with a fantastic one-on-one save in the second half against The Baggies despite having little else to do during the match.
Rhys Williams came on for the injured Matip on Sunday. Expect the youngster to start in central defence alongside Fabinho. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson will take their places on either flank.
I think we could see a start for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain against Newcastle. Curtis Jones may be rested with ‘The Ox’ coming into midfield with Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum.
Klopp will probably go full strength in attack with Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mané.
