Reds apparently won't be pursuing a centre-back signing this month
It has been reported that Liverpool will not be actively pursuing a centre-half signing during the January transfer window.
According to James Pearce and Tom Worville in The Athletic, Jürgen Klopp and co are willing to go with what they have now for the rest of the season. This, despite the long-term injuries to the centre-back pairing of Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk and the recurring injuries to Joël Matip. Liverpool’s defensive midfielder Fabinho has become the new ‘first-choice’ centre-half at the heart of the back four. However, The Reds’ midfield has evidently suffered at the loss of one of the world’s best midfielders. Brazil international Fabinho has done a stellar job in defence but is hugely missed in his ‘6’ role as it allows the other two midfielders more opportunities to roam forward and help the front three.
Pearce and Worville’s piece states:
‘There’s no sign of incoming reinforcements, with senior Anfield sources adamant that there are unlikely to be any new additions to Jürgen Klopp’s squad this month.’
This may come as disheartening to many LFC fans around the world as it seems the Premier League title is there for the taking this season. Yet, Liverpool don’t seem to want to pounce on this gilt-edged chance to win league title number 20.
Schalke defender Ozan Kabak was a player of interest as far back as November, as per Pearce and Worville. Liverpool did make contact with the German club but decided not to pursue the matter further.
As for the Sven Botman rumours, they state that the player is “not even under consideration for the summer window”.
It appears the club has its strategy and is sticking to it regardless.
It’s time to not only trust in Michael Edwards’ scouting team’s ability to pick out signings but also to take it in good faith that there may not be a suitable candidate available when they balk at any potential incoming transfers.
