Liverpool midfielder nominated for Champions League Player of the Week award
Liverpool’s Fabinho is one of four players nominated for the Champions League Player of the Week award after his performance in The Reds’ win over RB Leipzig.
Fabinho was in inspired form as he returned to his more natural defensive-midfield role, guarding the young centre-back pairing of Nat Phillips and Ozan Kabak. Thiago Alcântara was also allowed to roam further forward with Fabinho providing cover at the base of midfield. The Brazil international’s presence alone had such a positive effect throughout the Liverpool team.
Fabinho’s performance then rightfully earned him more of the spotlight. He snuffed out countless RB Leipzig attacks and attempted through balls, dropping back between Phillips and Kabak to almost act as a third central defender at times.
Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané were the goalscorers on the night but Fabinho was presented with UEFA’s Man of the Match award for his efforts.
Thiago commented after the game how Fabinho is “awesome to play alongside”. High praise indeed from one of the game’s most decorated players.
Fabinho is on a shortlist of four players for the Champions League Player of the Week award. The others are Erling Haaland (Borussia Dortmund), Sérgio Oliveira (FC Porto), and Keylor Navas (Paris Saint-Germain).
