History
The history of Liverpool Football Club began in 1878 when a football team was founded at the Church of Saint Domingo. The team was named “Everton” – after the name of one of the districts of the city, and its owner in the early years was the English businessman John Haulding, who in 1897 took over as mayor of the city. Houlding helped the team with money – with his help, the team became one of the strongest clubs of that time, and in 1891 even won the English championship.
Only in 1892, the club began to be called as we call it today – Liverpool. In 1898, Liverpool changed the previous white-blue colours to red, and a year in the coat of arms of the club appeared a symbol of Mersersites – Bird Liver.
Club owners
Throughout the history of the existence of the Liverpool club, it has changed several owners. We will only mention a few of them. One of the most famous was David Moores – his family-owned Liverpool for half the 20th century, but in 2007 he was forced to sell the club to Americans George Gillett and Tom Hicks due to debts. The deal took place for 219 million euros. However, the new American owners could not improve the club’s business – in three years, they only worsened the club’s position and resold it to other Americans. The club was bought by Fenway Sports Group, which also owns the Boston Red Sox baseball club. The company paid 300 million euros for the purchase of the club.
Owner of Fenway Sports Group (John W)
The principal owner of FSG is one of the most successful American businessmen, John Henry. FSG bought Liverpool FC. In 1976, he developed his investment strategy, the essence of which was to follow the trend. According to this strategy, business success consists in the systematic management of capital and profit, regardless of the market value of the goods, as well as various subjective factors. By 2006, he had already made a fortune from investments – his income exceeded a billion dollars.
However, in England, not everyone agreed with the way the businessman conducts the affairs of the football club. In addition, his American origin also played a role. As a result, the club faced a crisis – in 2016, the club raised ticket prices by one and a half times, and the season ticket became the most expensive in the Premier League – 1029 euros.
Nowadays
In 2019, the American tried to copyright the word “Liverpool”, but many did not support his decision to make money on the name of the club.
As a result, in 2020, The Telegraph published a document called “The Big Picture Project” – then everyone learned that for three years the owners of Liverpool, Manchester United, and the president of the English Football League, Rick Parry, were developing reform of the championship of England.
This news became a sensation – did not only the fans of the club not like it, but also the leadership of the Premier League and the British government. The Department of Culture of England reported that it was very disappointed with such secret negotiations.
As a result, Henry and the Fenway Group concluded that they could not realize their plans on English soil.
Tom Werner
Another name that is worth mentioning in the context of the Liverpool club is the name of the American TV producer and businessman Thomas Werner. Today he is the chairman of Liverpool FC. In addition to the English club, he is also the chairman of the Boston Red Sox club.
Werner took over as club chairman in 2010 and has done a lot for the team in his tenure – the club has won four trophies during his tenure, including the European Super League in 2019 that Liverpool won and winning the Premier League in 2020 under Jurgen Klopp.
Conclusion
The history of the board of the Liverpool football club is extensive, but the main place in it is occupied by John William Henry, whose actions throughout the history of the club were controversial and sometimes caused dissatisfaction with the fans.
Despite the current situation, it is worth noting that Fenway Sports Group and John W have made a great contribution to the development of the English football club Liverpool over the past ten years. John W, his company and the Americans in recent years invested 120 million euros in the reconstruction of the new stadium, invited good coaches to work, who recruited a good team, thanks to which the club won the Premier League title for the first time in 19 years and won the Champions League.
Fenway sports group holdings also invested 50 million euros in the construction of a new training base for football players.
Despite this, the conspiracy to join the Super League undermined not only Henry’s efforts in the eyes of the Liverpool supporters, but also violated the traditions of Liverpool, which are very important for the club’s fans – much more important than income.
Am a Liverpool fan and all i can say is I love the club
