This could have gone to Trent for his brilliant first half ball playing, Fabinho for his steady shielding throughout, Mo for his goal, assist, and attempts at getting Darwin in, but for me it was Virgil’s presence and leadership that shone the brightest.

He was able to command and keep that high line where it could be most effective, with a dominant display of defensive work when it was needed.

When Villa was really pushing, Virgil was able to demand more of those around him and make sure we got over the line. The goal was a critical moment to give the away side that breathing space, with a strike taken like a seasoned forward.

It may not have been vintage, but it got us those perfect three points.
