Brighton vs Liverpool betting preview: Reds narrow favourites for victory

Liverpool will be looking to get back to winning ways when they take on Brighton & Hove Albion in a huge game at the Amex Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Jurgen Klopp’s side have endured a disappointing season so far and the German coach is under pressure to get the Reds back in the top four. Liverpool have been so inconsistent, that fans in Klopp’s native Germany may prefer to try their luck on a bally wulff automaten rather than bet on the Merseysiders winning this game, as it’s become very difficult to predict how Liverpool will play this season.

After being one of the best teams on the planet over the past five years, the Reds are suddenly looking vulnerable and are no longer Manchester City’s main challengers for the Premier League title. Liverpool looked to have turned a corner after the World Cup break as they beat Leicester City and Aston Villa before the turn of the year. However, a shocking performance against Brentford on January 2nd saw them slump to a 3-1 defeat and that was followed by another poor display during a 2-2 draw with Wolves in the FA Cup last weekend.

Klopp’s side now sit sixth in the Premier League table, seven points off the top four, so they desperately need a win on the south coast on Saturday to close the gap on Manchester United and Newcastle United.

However, that’s not going to be an easy task against an impressive Brighton outfit, who are just one point behind Liverpool in the table. The Seagulls have been excellent under Roberto De Zebri since he replaced Graham Potter and they will be quietly confident of picking up a positive result on home soil.

Betting odds

Despite their questionable form, Liverpool are still the narrow favourites with the bookmakers to claim all three points this weekend. The Reds are priced at 21/20 to win the game, Brighton can be backed at 12/5 and the draw is available at odds of 27/10.

Some neutrals may be tempted to bet on Brighton as odds of 12/5 seem generous considering their good form this season. However, we can’t underestimate Liverpool as they still have a huge amount of quality throughout their squad.

Darwin Nunez has come under criticism for some of his poor finishing since arriving in the summer but the Uruguayan international is still the 5/1 second-favourite in the betting markets to open the scoring on Saturday. Mohamed Salah is the leading candidate at 9/2.

Both teams to score looks nailed on at odds of 40/85 as Liverpool have been sloppy in defence but are always a threat with the likes of Salah in the team.

Gakpo to make Premier League debut

January signing Cody Gakpo made his bow against Wolves in the FA Cup after completing his move from PSV. The Dutchman is now expected to make his Premier League debut against Brighton and he’ll be looking to build on a decent showing last time out.

Roberto Firmino could return to the squad after an injury absence but the Brazilian won’t be fit to start. Therefore, with Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz still on the sidelines, Gakpo should continue in attack along with Salah and Nunez. The Dutch ace is 2/1 to score at any time in this game.

Virgil van Dijk has been ruled out for at least a month with a thigh injury so Joe Gomez could start alongside Joel Matip in defence. James Milner may return to the squad after recovering from a thigh injury but Arthur remains on the sidelines.

Prediction

This should be a fascinating game as Brighton are playing some lovely football and are riding high in the league. Liverpool on the other hand have injury problems and are struggling for consistency, so we should see a good game on the south coast.

If Liverpool perform like they have in the past two games then they’ll be lucky to get a draw against Brighton, but we’re backing Klopp to muster a response from his players. A narrow 2-1 Liverpool win is our prediction, and you can bet on that outcome at odds of 15/2. Brighton 1-2 Liverpool
