Three right-backs Liverpool should target in the summer

Reports in recent weeks have suggested that Liverpool could be in the market to sign a right-back in the upcoming summer transfer window to help tighten up their defence.

These claims have arguably been backed up by the change of system by Jurgen Klopp, which has seen Trent Alexander-Arnold excel in a midfield role rather than at full-back.

This article will look at three possible right-back options that Klopp could look to sign in the summer transfer window.

Benjamin Pavard

The Bayern Munich full-back has played an important role under both Julian Nagelsmann and Thomas Tuchel so far this season, making 37 appearances in all competitions already this season.

Transfermarkt, currently has the French international valued at £35 million but the German champions would be unlikely to let Pavard leave without securing a permanent replacement as they look unlikely to sign Manchester City’s Joao Cancelo at the end of the season.

Pavard would provide a much more assuring stability to Liverpool’s right-hand side and could even slot into the centre of defence due to his defensive ability.

However, it’s not just his defensive ability that stands out among other right-backs in the world, as he has also proven his ability to contribute offensively as well.

In 156 appearances for Bayern Munich, the full-back has 24 goal involvements (12 goals, 12 assists) and who could possibly forget his stunning goal for France against Argentina in the 2018 World Cup Quarter-Final.

Sergino Dest

AC Milan full-back Sergino Dest has struggled for consistency since his loan move from Barcelona last summer, making just 14 appearances in all competitions for the Italian side so far this season.

However, it wasn’t long ago that the USA international was labelled as one of the hottest prospects in world football during his time at Barcelona and Ajax.

With the right-back being just 22-years-old, I firmly believe that Jurgen Klopp could turn the full-back into a solid player with both defensive stability and attacking creativity.

Dest is currently valued at just £12 million, which could prove to become a bargain with the right guidance and coaching.

Barcelona will likely be forced to sell the full-back due to the registration and financial restrictions they currently find themselves under.

Ridle Baku

Wolfsburg right-back Ridle Baku has starred for the German side so far this season, making 30 appearances in all competitions scoring five goals and assisting another one.

The 25-year-old is currently being targeted by Arsenal, and is reportedly keen for a move to the Premier League which could put Liverpool in a good position to make a move for the German international.

Whilst being a pacy and forward-thinking full-back, Baku is more than capable of being a reliable defender due to his positional intelligence and tackling ability.

A deal for Baku would likely cost around £15 million, but could ultimately prove to be a smart piece of business by the Reds.
