Who Should Liverpool Sign This Summer?

TheĀ  2022/23 season proved to be a disappointing one for The Reds. Despite a late flourish towards the end of the season, overall results were simply not good enough and Jurgen Klopp’s men were miles off the performances shown by their Premier League rivals.

It is a transitional time at Anfield. The team that was so impressive in winning the league in 2019/20 has run out of steam, with new arrivals struggling to live up to the hype in the main. Transfer business this summer is likely to be key to Liverpool’s chances of closing the gap on champions Man City, with the squad needing investment in more than one area.

So, Who Should Liverpool Sign This Summer?

Having finished so far behind their main rivals last season, it is no surprise to see them at a price of 9/1 in the latest football odds for the Premier League in 2023/24. If they are to outperform these odds, Jurgen Klopp’s decisions on possible incomings will be critical.

Let’s take a look at some of the players that Klopp should be targeting in the summer.

Alexis MacAllister

Midfield has become the main problem for Liverpool. The likes of Jordan Henderson and Thiago are beginning to get on in years, whilst Fabinho’s form has completely tailed off after such a strong start at Anfield.

One option that would be a huge upgrade on the current midfielders at the club is Brighton’s World Cup winner, Alexis MacAllister. The Argentinian played a big part in Brighton’s impressive performances last season and has the ability to play both as a holding midfielder or higher up the pitch.

Brighton are likely to be in for the tough task of holding on to their key players this summer, and MacAllister will have plenty of suitors amongst the top teams around Europe. It would be quite a coup for Klopp to persuade him to come to Anfield.

Moises Caicedo

Another Brighton star who is likely to be moving to pastures new in the summer is Moises Caicedo. Arsenal have been strongly linked with the all-action midfielder, but he could have his head turned the way Anfield with the chance to play under Klopp.

He is exactly the type of player that The Reds need for their midfield and the fact that he also played at right-back last season is an added bonus. Again, Liverpool will have to beat off a host of teams if they are to sign the Ecuador international.

Marc Guehi

Ibrahima Konate’s performances were much improved last season, but there are still worries over his ability to perform against the best attackers in the league. Klopp is keen to find a permanent partner for Virgil van Dijk at the heart of the defence, and he could do worse than considering Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi.

A solid defender with the ability to read the game well, the three-time England cap, could be the perfect partner for van Dijk. He is a centre-half of the old-fashioned type, more eager to block and tackle than be a pass master. He could be the perfect foil for the big Dutchman.
