Crewe 1 – 2 Liverpool – 26/02/11
With their third of the week the young Reds made it eight wins on the spin, showing their grit to come from a goal down away at Crewe. After conceding a penalty and falling behind 1-0 within the first 5 minutes, the team rallied and drew level courtesy of a Toni Silva header. The Portuguese winger bundled home after a Krisztian Adorjan corner, grabbing the goal that certainly his performance earlier in the week against Huddersfield deserved.
In form Adam Morgan struck the winner with his ninth of the season but seventh in the last 6 games. Crewe’s defenders backed off as Raheem Sterling ran towards goal, allowing Morgan to find the kind of space he can be lethal in. A simple square pass and another left footed finish later and the Reds were on their way to all three points. As a local lad, wearing the No. 9 and developing a reputation as a natural, left-footed finisher there is an easy; if a little lazy; comparison to be made with the man known as God on the Kop. But instead of prematurely hailing Morgan as the second coming it is more worth noting that he has only recently had the chance to establish himself in the side at the expense of the injured Michael Ngoo.
Considering the big man was far and away the U18’s top scorer before injury stuck, it will be a welcome headache for Rodolfo Borrell how to fit the likes of Morgan, Ngoo & Adorjan into his forward line. If nothing else this highlights the strength in depth the U18’s have, with key players such as Ngoo & Wisdom returning from injury for the final quarter of the season.
On an excellent run of form the Reds now entertain Blackburn in their next Academy League fixture, before the big FA Youth Cup showdown with United at Anfield on Sunday 13th March, 12.00 P.M. kick off.
