Jamal Musiala: Anfield’s Next Star?

Liverpool are reportedly set to rival Manchester City for the signing of Bayern Munich star Jamal Musiala, in a deal that could be worth £80million. The German wonderkid recently refused to sign a new contract for the Bundesliga giants and is tipped to seek a move to the Premier League.

The 21-year-old is reported to prefer a move to one of those two sides, despite interest from Chelsea and Manchester United, too. Today we’re going to be taking a deeper look at Musiala and why he would be a brilliant signing for the Reds.

For Those Who Don’t Know…

Musiala is a 21-year-old attacking midfielder, currently playing for Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga. Despite his young age, Musiala has racked up 153 senior appearances for the German giants already.

The youngster has proven himself as a prominent goal threat too, with 40 goals and 27 assists for the club already. His incredible club form has also earned him plenty of minutes for the German National Team, with 25 caps to his name.

Musiala has also already built up an impressive haul of trophies, with four Bundesliga titles, three German Super Cups, one UEFA Champions League and one UEFA Super Cup. In total, he has ten major titles at the age of 21.

His current contract at Bayern Munich is set to expire in 2026, hence the recent panic from the German club over his declining value. Therefore, the club are expected to cut their losses on the youngster in the summer, which provides an extraordinary opportunity to the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City.

Crunching the Numbers

When looking at Musiala’s stats on FBRef, its clear to see why he is rated so highly across the world. His radar below also proves just how well-rounded he is as a player, rather than just being a talented footballer.

As you can see, his attacking performance is quite incredible. In terms of successful take-ons and his pass completion percentage, there aren’t many players better than him in Europe. His number of progressive passes and progressive carries is also hugely impressive and would suit Liverpool’s style of play perfectly.

Despite his high number of goal-involvements in recent years, it does seem that his end-product is still something that he is working on. His totals of shots and assists appear a slight weakness in his game, but his shot-creating actions and non-penalty goals remain quite impressive.

Fitting Liverpool’s System

Musiala would be more than capable of playing an advanced midfield role in Liverpool’s system, which could become even more effective should someone like Xabi Alonso replace Jurgen Klopp in the summer. However, he could also add valuable depth to the forward positions and could provide the much-needed rotation with Mohamed Salah on the right-wing.

The fact that £80million would be quite a bargain for Musiala really shows how talented he is. With the right guidance, he could undoubtedly become one of the best players in the world.
