‘Lots To Like’ as Liverpool Smash Spurs 4-2 at Anfield

For a game that in the context of Liverpool’s season had little riding on it, this one seemed to be dramatic enough. Goals from open play were back, pressing was back, players playing their actual position was back and so for some time were Liverpool.

In typical style and I’m keeping with the theme of this campaign, they made it more difficult than they needed to but in Jurgen Klopp’s last home game against a big six side, they secured all three points. There was a lot to like and there was some hairy moments but the reds were worth all three points. We look at the lessons learned from a sunny Anfield on a bank holiday Sunday.

Salah and Trent Played Where They Should Be

Who knew that playing the worlds best right back at that position and allowing Salah to drift inside closer to the goal could have such profound effects. Whatever’s been said recently, Liverpool’s two most creative players were at the hub of this victory and Salah’s goal was a great reminder he’s not maybe finished like some had suggested.

Trent made the most passes into the final third (15) and the sight of him releasing the Egyptian and his forward colleagues into space time and time again was great to see. For all the sadness, the removal of the inverted tactic maybe the best one we saw yesterday. Both looked comfortable where they should be.

Harvey Starting and Effecting

There’s been very few things of real note from the midfield in recent weeks and it was great to see Harvey Elliott have a real impact from the beginning. He’d almost become Liverpool’s super sub this season, but in this one he was superb and creating the the most chances (six) and making the most recoveries (seven) meant he was well worth the sponsors man of the match.

It took him to four goals and nine assists for the campaign, which put him level with Alexis Mac Allister’s goal contributions for this campaign. We’ll be watching that absolute beauty which curled into the top corner on repeat for a while too.

Gakpo Staking Late Claim

He’s been the utility player this season, but he’s arguably been Liverpools best forward over the last month. Against Spurs, Cody Gakpo was excellent and all his best work came from the left hand side. It was an inch perfect ball for Salah to the back post which saw Liverpool open the scoring and a great climb from Elliott’s delivery which saw him deservedly add his name to the scoresheet.

The Dutchman has recently become a father and he looked in great spirits throughout Anna’s he notched his fifteenth goal and sixth assist of the season. It can’t be ignored that all his best work was on the left hand side. Maybe we’ll see more of that next campaign.
