Former Liverpool Man the Leading the Race to Replace Edin Terzic at Borussia Dortmund

Ever since Jurgen Klopp’s shock departure announcement earlier in 2024, the managerial market has become an absolute mess. That market has taken another shot twist today as Edin Terzic announced his shock exit from Borussia Dortmund, despite reaching the UEFA Champions League final earlier this month.

Thankfully, Liverpool acted swiftly in comparison to their domestic and European rivals with Arne Slot taking Klopp’s place in the Anfield dugout for the 2024/25 season. However, a former Liverpool man is currently the “leading candidate” to replace Terzic at Dortmund, according to SportBild.

New Paths Revealed

That former Liverpool man is Nuri Sahin, who spent the 2012-13 season on loan at the Reds and is currently one of the favourites to become the next Borussia Dortmund head coach. After also spending time at Real Madrid and making over 200 appearances for Dortmund as a player, the Turkish midfielder made his move into management in 2021, at Antalyaspor.

Sahin remained at the Turkish side until 2023, where he would then become assistant head coach at Dortmund behind Terzic. Since making that move, Sahin has reportedly impressed the Dortmund hierarchy, therefore putting himself in pole position to replace Terzic.

This sort of move isn’t unusual for Dortmund, with Terzic himself being promoted to head coach after six years as a coach at the club, working behind the likes of Lucien Favre and Marco Rose. With that being said, it will definitely be interesting to see whether Sahin lands the job and could become another former Red to go onto have a promising coaching career.

Klopp Speculation

Of course, as expected, Terzic’s departure has created huge speculation over the potential return of Jurgen Klopp to Borussia Dortmund. The iconic Liverpool manager was at the UEFA Champions League Final to support his former side, as they ultimately lost 2-0 at the hands of Real Madrid at Wembley Stadium.

Dortmund will now join the German National Team in the list of destinations being heavily linked with Klopp. However, I strongly don’t expect this to be the case with Klopp strongly dismissing any reports of a return to management for the 2024-25 season.

In my opinion, obviously depending on Germany’s performance at EURO 2024, I think the German National Team remains Klopp’s most likely next destination as I strongly suspect that Julian Nagelsmann will want a return to club management in the fairly near future.
