At the centre of the debate is Ibrahima Konate, whose deal is set to expire in June. Davis explained the precarious nature of the situation, quoting reporting that “Liverpool want to renew his deal… but so far failed to strike an agreement.” He added emphasis with his own view, “the ball is in Konate’s court.”
This uncertainty has significant knock-on effects. Liverpool’s recruitment team must plan for multiple outcomes, including the possibility that Konate departs on a free transfer. Davis acknowledged the reality facing the club, saying, “the smart money right now is that Ibou [Konate] leaves on a free.”
Such a scenario would dramatically reshape Liverpool’s transfer strategy, especially with a £60m move for Jeremy Jacquet already in motion. Davis questioned the scale of that investment, asking, “When have Liverpool ever spent sixty million quid on a back up?” He added that there is “a real suspicion… that Jeremy Jacquet almost is the Konate replacement.”

Among the names discussed, Liverpool retain a long-standing interest in Jan Paul van Hecke. Davis described the Dutch defender as a unique profile, highlighting strengths and concerns in equal measure.
He explained, “it’s like someone describing a midfielder at centre-back, progression in terms of passing and carrying sensational.” However, he also raised doubts about defensive fundamentals, stating, “what about the actual defending… tackle, interceptions, clearances, aerials… it’s not the most handsome.”
This duality appears central to Liverpool’s assessment. Van Hecke’s ability on the ball fits a modern system, but questions remain over whether he can anchor a defence competing at the highest level.
Nathan Collins interest backed by internal checks
The second key target under discussion is Nathan Collins, with Davis revealing concrete background work by the club. He stated, “Liverpool asked about what’s the score or what’s the availability of Nathan Collins.”
Although Brentford rebuffed initial enquiries, the interest has not faded. Davis confirmed, “Liverpool have a real interest still in Nathan Collins.”
He acknowledged mixed data around the defender’s profile, noting, “his aerials aren’t actually that high… but Liverpool do have an interest.” There is also a suggestion that leadership qualities may play a role, with Collins seen by some as a strong character option within the squad.
