Ever since Fabinho departed Liverpool, the club has searched for a midfielder capable of protecting the defence with the same authority, intelligence and physical dominance that made the Brazilian one of the world’s very best in his position.

None have truly succeeded.

Now, with Andoni Iraola beginning a new era at Anfield, Liverpool have an opportunity to finally solve what has become the most important position in the squad.

The Real Madrid midfielder could reportedly be available for around £80 million this summer, and while that represents a significant investment, Liverpool would be acquiring a player entering the absolute peak years of his career.

The French international has everything Liverpool have lacked.

Most importantly, he thrives when shielding the back four.

Names such as Adam Wharton continue to attract valuations comfortably exceeding £100 million.

Other Premier League midfielders are commanding similarly extraordinary fees.

By comparison, securing Tchouaméni for around £80 million could represent outstanding value.

Alongside Adam Wharton, should Liverpool somehow pursue that route, or even alongside Alexis Mac Allister if the Argentine remains at Anfield, Tchouaméni would provide the perfect defensive platform.

His presence would allow the more creative midfielders greater freedom to influence matches higher up the pitch: Florian Wirtz would receive quicker service. Alexander Isak would benefit from faster transitions. Liverpool’s defensive line would enjoy greater protection. The entire structure would become more balanced.

Perhaps most importantly, Liverpool would finally possess the specialist holding midfielder they have been missing since Fabinho left the club.

Every successful Liverpool side has been built upon strong foundations.

From Javier Mascherano to Fabinho, the great teams always had someone prepared to do the unseen work that allowed others to shine. If Andoni Iraola is to restore Liverpool to the summit of English and European football, that position must become a priority.
