Liverpool have arrived at one of those familiar late-window positions where a player expected to leave has stayed, and attention must now shift quickly from transfer noise to on-pitch contribution. According to Liverpool.com, Cody Gakpo has held talks with Liverpool’s owners after an anticipated summer exit failed to materialise.

The background is significant. Interest in Gakpo was substantial, with Tottenham monitoring the situation as they looked at options for Roberto De Zerbi’s attack. Manchester City then emerged strongly in the closing stages, and the suggestion is that this became the player’s preferred move. From Liverpool’s side, the stance appears to have been straightforward, they would only sanction a departure if a suitable replacement could be secured in time.

That replacement never arrived. Liverpool explored alternatives, including moves for Yankuba Minteh and Ismaila Sarr, but both routes closed when offers were turned down. With the squad unable to be replenished to the required level before the deadline, the club retained Gakpo and rejected an offer reported to be around $110 million, which converts to roughly £86 million.

What happens after a failed transfer can often shape the next phase of a season. In this case, Liverpool have evidently moved to draw a line under events. The reported “clear the air” talks point to a desire from all parties to stabilise the situation quickly, reduce uncertainty and ensure that Gakpo is fully aligned with Andoni Iraola’s plans.

That matters because Liverpool need depth and quality across the frontline, particularly early in the campaign when fitness, rhythm and adaptation remain live issues. Bradley Barcola’s arrival gives Iraola another option on the left, but the new signing is still building sharpness and lacks a full pre-season base. Gakpo, by contrast, is available now and has already shown signs of form.

That endorsement is important. Managers can sometimes create distance in these situations, yet Iraola has instead reinforced the player’s value. Internally, that should help Liverpool refocus ahead of the meeting with Ipswich Town, where Gakpo remains a genuine option to start.

January transfer window could bring fresh decision

For now, the market has shut and Liverpool move on with Gakpo still firmly in the squad. Whether this proves a temporary pause or a full reset remains to be seen. Much will depend on his performances, the team’s results and whether the same clubs return in January.

At present, Liverpool’s calculation looks clear, keeping an established attacker was preferable to accepting a major fee without the right replacement lined up. In the short term, that is understandable. From a Liverpool supporter’s perspective, this is a fascinating one because it sits somewhere between reassuring and slightly uneasy. On one hand, keeping Cody Gakpo makes complete sense. Liverpool are already in a period of change under Andoni Iraola, and removing an experienced attacking option that late in the window would have carried obvious risk, especially if the replacements were not obtainable.

There is also a football argument in Gakpo’s favour. He has started the season well, he knows the league, and he gives Liverpool tactical flexibility across the front line. If Barcola needs time, then Gakpo’s role becomes even more important in the immediate weeks ahead. That alone makes the decision to keep him feel sensible.

At the same time, supporters will wonder how committed he now feels after a move came so close. The reported talks with the owners are therefore probably the most important part of this whole story. If those discussions have genuinely cleared the air, Liverpool could benefit from a motivated player with a point to prove.

There is every chance this resurfaces in January, particularly if major clubs remain interested. Until then, fans will probably take a fairly simple view, forget the noise, produce consistently, and help Liverpool win matches. If Gakpo does that, the situation calms down very quickly.
