Liverpool’s summer business around Curtis Jones appears to have opened another line of interest, with TeamTalk reporting that the club made checks on Aleksandar Stankovic during negotiations with Inter Milan.

As outlined in the report, Liverpool “made an enquiry about Aleksandar Stankovic during their talks with Inter Milan over Curtis Jones”, using those discussions to establish whether the Serbian midfielder might have been attainable. That approach is understood to have come despite Liverpool maintaining internally that midfield was not a priority area, even if Jones departed.

Jones did go on to secure “the move he wanted”, completing a transfer to the Serie A champions after sustained interest. Yet the more revealing detail is that Liverpool “also used the negotiations to assess the possibility of bringing Stankovic in the opposite direction”. It suggests a club that may not be urgently shopping for a midfielder, but is still alert to opportunity when a highly-rated talent becomes part of wider talks.

Stankovic profile catches Liverpool attention

Stankovic, 21, has steadily built a strong reputation. The report notes that he returned to Inter this summer after the Italian side activated a buy-back clause following his development spell away from San Siro. He previously spent time on loan with Luzern before a productive campaign at Club Brugge, where he “emerged as one of the most impressive young holding midfielders in Europe”.

That rise has not gone unnoticed. Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur were both credited with serious interest earlier in the window, but Inter chose to bring him back. Even so, TeamTalk states that “Inter had considered moving Stankovic on again almost immediately after completing his permanent return”, with “a loan with an obligation to buy” discussed as a possible framework. Liverpool, crucially, were among those who asked the question.

Inter stance may delay Liverpool move

For now, the answer from Milan appears straightforward. Inter “ultimately made clear that Stankovic would remain at the club”, largely because head coach Cristian Chivu is said to be convinced by the player and keen to test him in the first team this season.

That leaves Liverpool in a watching brief. The report adds that the Reds are “currently satisfied with their midfield options”, a view strengthened by Trey Nyoni’s growing role around the senior setup. In that context, there was no obvious need to force a replacement for Jones.

Still, there is a broader point here. Liverpool are expected to revisit the midfield market in 2027, and Stankovic is “firmly among the players they will continue to monitor as the season develops”. In practical terms, that means groundwork has already been done. The club now has a clear sense of the player’s situation, Inter’s current thinking, and the circumstances that might reopen the door in future.

From a Liverpool perspective, this feels like smart scouting rather than a sign of panic. The key line is that Liverpool were never under pressure to replace Curtis Jones directly, and that matters. A lot of fans will be pleased the club did not jump into the market for the sake of appearances.

At the same time, Aleksandar Stankovic sounds exactly the sort of profile Liverpool should be tracking. He is young, developing well, and already has top-level clubs circling. If he truly “emerged as one of the most impressive young holding midfielders in Europe”, then it makes perfect sense to keep his name live internally.

The other encouraging part is the timing. Liverpool have apparently done the difficult early work already, establishing whether a deal structure could have been possible and learning Inter’s stance. That can make a major difference later, especially if Stankovic’s game kicks on and his situation changes over the next 12 months.

Supporters will probably be split on whether midfield needs addressing sooner than 2027, because opinions always differ once a season gets going. But if Trey Nyoni is genuinely pushing into the first-team picture, then patience has merit. There is no issue with waiting for the right player rather than just the next available one. On this evidence, Stankovic may well be one to watch closely.
