Alexander Isak injury update as Liverpool striker withdraws from Sweden duty

Liverpool have received an early boost over Alexander Isak’s injury, with Sweden confirming that the forward has withdrawn from international duty because of a minor thigh problem.

Isak had been included in Graham Potter’s Sweden squad for the current international break, but he will now return to Liverpool for further assessment. The 27 year old is set to miss Sweden’s meeting with Poland on Monday, along with the fixtures against Bosnia & Herzegovina and Romania.

For Liverpool, the timing is worth noting. Andoni Iraola’s side will soon return to Premier League action, and Isak has quickly established himself as an important attacking option since arriving at Anfield.

Potter addressed Isak’s withdrawal and made clear that Sweden’s decision was influenced by the demands placed on the striker during a congested period of fixtures.

As quoted by Expressen: “He has a small problem with his thigh, it’s nothing big but because of the amount of games in a short time he won’t be able to play,” Potter said.

That assessment will be of interest to Liverpool, particularly with the club preparing for another demanding run of matches. A minor injury can become a bigger concern when a player is being asked to operate at full intensity every few days, so Sweden have opted against taking unnecessary risks with Isak.

Potter also acknowledged the disappointment surrounding the decision, with the forward and Sweden both losing an important player during the international break.

“It’s frustrating both for him and for us. But it is what it is,” Potter added.

Liverpool await further assessment

The immediate priority for Liverpool will be establishing precisely how Isak’s thigh problem responds once he returns to club duty.

The striker is expected back at the AXA Training Centre, where Liverpool’s medical staff will assess the injury before Iraola and his coaching team make any decision about his availability.

There is no suggestion from Potter that Isak is facing a significant lay-off. His comments indicate that Sweden’s decision was largely precautionary, given the number of matches being played in a short period.

That will provide some encouragement for Liverpool, although the club will understandably want to carry out its own checks before drawing firm conclusions.

Isak focus turns back to Liverpool

Isak’s absence is nevertheless a setback for Sweden, particularly with three fixtures on the schedule. Hjalmar Ekdal is also unavailable after suffering an injury, leaving Potter with further selection issues to address.

For Liverpool, the focus is different. The club will want Isak fit and available when Premier League football resumes, especially after the forward made a strong impression following his move to Anfield.
