Liverpool January Transfer Plans Questioned as David Lynch Casts Doubt on Midfield Signing

Liverpool’s January transfer plans remain uncertain, with journalist David Lynch expressing scepticism over suggestions that the Reds will strengthen their midfield during the winter window.

Speaking to Dave Davis on Anfield Index’s Media Matters podcast, Lynch discussed Liverpool’s recruitment priorities, potential departures and the challenges facing head coach Andoni Iraola following the 3-2 Champions League defeat to Fenerbahce.

Despite growing questions surrounding Liverpool’s squad, Lynch believes a quiet January transfer window remains a realistic possibility.

“I would still lean on the idea that they maybe don’t, unless, you know, something happens around a Lameen Kamara and they don’t want to miss the boat.”

Liverpool January Transfer Plans Face Midfield Uncertainty

Davis raised comments attributed to French investigative journalist Romain Molina, who suggested Liverpool wanted to recruit a midfielder during the winter transfer window.

Lynch questioned whether such a move was guaranteed.

“I don’t really agree with Romain that they are definitely going to sign a midfielder in January.”

He added: “May prove to be right but it’s not guaranteed is what I’d say. And I don’t think you can say that with any confidence right now.”

Liverpool’s existing midfield options present complications for any potential recruitment.

Lynch highlighted Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch, whose suitability for Iraola’s system has come under scrutiny.

“I’m not sure Szoboszlai is perfect. I’m not sure Grabenberch is perfect for what the manager wants, but they’re on big contracts and they’re there.”

The journalist suggested that Liverpool would need to address their existing options before making another midfield addition.

“It would just be very un-Liverpool to kind of add a central midfielder without doing anything else in terms of allowing for an outgoing.”

Alejandro Balde Links Raise Questions Over Liverpool’s Left Back Plans

Davis also discussed reports linking Liverpool and AC Milan with Barcelona defender Alejandro Balde, including suggestions of a €45 million asking price.

Lynch remained unconvinced that Liverpool would prioritise the position in January.

“They’ve got two imperfect options, no question about that, but they’ve got two options.”

He also questioned the strength of the reported interest.

“It’s not anything I’ve heard about as well personally at the moment yet.”

Lynch suggested Liverpool might have been included in the speculation to generate interest in the player.

“I don’t know whether Liverpool are just getting dragged into that one a little bit to kind of try and create a market.”

David Lynch Identifies Liverpool’s Summer Transfer Priorities

Davis questioned whether delaying recruitment until the summer could leave Liverpool’s sporting hierarchy facing an excessive workload.

He highlighted potential decisions involving both full back positions, central midfield, Alisson Becker, Virgil van Dijk and Liverpool’s attacking options.

Lynch dismissed concerns about the scale of the potential rebuild.

“I don’t think they’re worried about that at all, to be honest. I mean, they never are, are they?”

He identified three areas requiring attention.

“I think it is the fullbacks and the midfield are a hundred percent of the things that need done.”

However, Lynch remained open to Liverpool bringing forward a summer signing if circumstances demanded it.

“Maybe there will be a kind of surprise in January and they’ll do something. They’ll get ahead of something that they need to do in the summer.”

His assessment suggests Liverpool’s January transfer activity could depend on opportunities emerging in the market, alongside decisions concerning their current squad.

For now, Lynch remains unconvinced that the Reds are preparing to make a midfield signing.

“I still land on the side of kind of scepticism there.”
